Hello Sumo-lings!

I'm David Jay and I'm very excited for the opportunity to keep this great product alive.

I'm a fellow Sumo-ling who also purchased Deepword (tier 4) when it was live on Appsumo so I believe in it and I was sad to hear it was going to close down which is why I decided to approach the Deepword team about acquiring it.

We're working through all the transition items currently and I'll be sending an update out to all of you next week.

P.S. Ankush is currently in the midst of dealing with hurricane Ian so we'd appreciate your thoughts and prayers for him and all the rest of us in Florida.

Looking forward to the future with all of you!

David

Great news for Sumo-lings! Thanks David!

DeepWord it's amazing, specially using our own actors, I generate unlimited from HD portrait photos.

May be Appsumo should invest or acquire DeepWord technology and add it to Appsumo Originals apps family.

This lip-sync AI technology have a great and unstoppable future on eLearning, demonstrations or presentations. Custom video content with Human Avatars is here to stay.

And DeepWord is the only software that let use our custom actors for free. This cost 1.000$/year with Synthesia, for example.

This could be a great solution for Sumolings. What do you think?

user-avatar

A few people are copy and pasting the email from Ankush, but "wordpressmint" aka Ankush posted here too...

https://appsumo.com/products/deep-word/questions/hello-everyone-this-is-ankush-from-de-957503/

An Appsumo Plus member himself no less - "wordpressmint | Deals Bought: 1174 | Member Since: 09/10/18"

I went all in this with, tier 5 @ $299 even though I had no use for it, I figured if they could keep improving the product over the next couple of years. I might find a use for it at some point, by the time I'd "broken even" against their advertised monthly costs (20 months x $15 = $300).

So, rather than the advertised $15 a month on their website, looks like this ended up costing me $100 a month and I never ended up getting any real use from it beyond a few minutes playing with it when I created my account!

Alas, I see Caitlin Hempstead updated this page to say that the AppSumo team are trying to find a resolution to this. Hopefully that means they're withholding payment to Ankush / Deepword / his business and refunding everybody, but I guess we'll see what happens in due course...

What I cannot understand is why the deepword.co website still looks to be carrying, business as usual and happily allowing people to signup for paid plans?

I'm totally with you on this. I also went all in on this and also cannot see how the founder didn't have clear knowledge of his intent to shut down the business in such a short period of time. There are two explanations in my view:

A) the company was on an existing path to shut down and put out the appsumo deal with no intent of serving it's squired customers long term and simply pulled a last ditch revenue grab opportunity with little or no intent to serve the resulting customers.

B) the company vastly miscalculated the operational costs of serving the customers it would acquire through this LTD and had absolutely no supporting operational revenue plan or sustainable finding to further develop its scaled revenue model to sustainably support its customer base.

Either way, this is very shoddy business practice and probably questionably legally in selling a product with no intent or capability of providing the advertised service for any reasonable amount of time that justifies the positioning and sale of a LTD.

Where I'm at now on this as an appsumo fan and repeat customer is that I really do expect a full refund on this purchase.

I hope the appsumo team can support and refund the affected valued customers who have been stung by this deal.

Hey David,

I've bough the absolute full tier, because i saw their potential, but yes... I would love to get in contact with the support, too - to not be forgotten "because I did not have said anything" ... what you've been writing to whom - did you write to "support@appsumo.com" for that?

Hi.

FYI.

Deepword will disappear on September 30. Very sad news from Ankush, the company CEO.

This is the notification. I received it yesterday in my email inbox. I don't quite understand how they can go out of business only 2 months after being here on Appsumo.

----------------- Ankush Letter -----------------

Hello Everyone,

This is Ankush from DeepWord. I just wanted to let you know that we unfortunately will be shutting down DeepWord and all of its servers at the end of this month on September 30th, 2022 at 12:00 PM EST.

We’ve had an incredible journey over the past 2 years: Growing to 60,000+ users that went on to generate over 150,000 minutes of video is no small feat. However, we’ve come to a stage where we can no longer continue with this project due to global market conditions (ie. recession, high-interest rates, inflated server costs, funding constraints). Synthetic media is an exciting new industry with tons of potential but also immense growing pains. We tried everything we could to keep DeepWord afloat, from switching cloud providers, to building our own servers, to even partnering with new emerging cloud startups. However, our attempts to manage these issues were inconsistent even with decent early-stage funding.

It deeply saddens me that this is the way things turned out to be. With that being said, I’d like to personally thank all of you for entering into this journey with us. Although we never reached our mass-adoption goal of video personalization at scale, we’ve learned immensely from all of you, in ways that much of our team cannot articulate. Again, thank you all for your support and love. We wouldn’t have made it even this far without you all. Our dream is still very much alive, so perhaps we can reopen DeepWord with higher video resolution, better video actors, and more integrations when the conditions for synthetic video production are more favorable.

To reiterate & clarify, we will be shutting down DeepWord and all of its servers at the end of this month on September 30th, 2022 at 12:00 PM EST. If you have any videos you generated that you’d like to save, please log into the website and download them to your local files before this date. All active monthly subscriptions to DeepWord will be canceled on this date as well. No one will be charged anything after this date. Your personal data/info will also be completely wiped on this date.

With Love,

Ankush Bikkasani

I find it hard to believe they had no idea it was going this way 2 months ago. Then they do a massive sale on AppSumo. A week after the refund period is over, I get this email.

My first deal on AppSumo, fully stacked.

To me, it looks like intent to defraud.
