    This is Tomas with DataMask Chrome blur extension!

    I have been creating productivity tools for the last 8 years at a large and small scale. With the introduction of GDPR policy in European Union, I have become increasingly aware of the importance of private data handling and the impact it can have on organization processes. It is too easy to make mistakes when handling private information without having any bad intentions. Screenshots are a particularly troublesome area, because it’s easy to mis sensitive information hiding in the picture and it’s very hard to go back and remove all instances of the sensitive information once it’s shared with others.

    With DataMask Chrome extension, I wanted to create a tool that makes it super easy to do the right thing and blur/scramble sensitive information before taking the website screenshot. I have picked web screenshots as a target area, because more and more software runs on the web nowadays. DataMask seemingly integrates to the Chrome browser and helps users to edit live websites and remove private information. Changes to the websites are also persisted and reapplied the next time the website is opened. This is especially useful for live SaaS product demos that might be done on a production dataset.

    Can blur be reversed?

    Simple blur (gaussian) is not safe and should only be used for stylistic purposes. I have created Blur+ mode that applies a distortion filter and makes blur irreversible.
