On the right track

Pros :

It's pretty easy to connect your twilio account and get your first conversations going.

We were happily surprised that there is an API available.

Cons :

The switch to activate your twilio numbers is not labelled properly and I was scratching my head a few minutes understanding why my automated sequence wouldn't let me add a new step - it needed an active number and they are all deactivated by default.

No way to personalize the convo : There are no merge tags available !

When texting from our CA number, text arrived with a short code number. Replies to this short code number didn't appear in the app inbox. (Not sure if it's a bug or a config issue on our end, still waiting for support answer.)

Overall, it's a tool with a lot of potential, just needs a few more features and polishing to make it intuitive and "automation" ready.

Hey, jeoff!

Thanks for the heads-up on some of these suggestions. We added merge tags last week, and they should be live in your account right now.

For texting from the Canada number, it sounds like that might be a Twilio issue — especially if you're integrated your account with Twilio. Our suggestion there is to reach out to Twilio support.

Thanks for your feedback. We'll keep making ShortySMS better.

More like a Street Taco

Okay I love AppSumo products. Bought this simply because I love SendFOX and was curious. Did not mind Tier 1 SMS access and upgraded to Tier 2 for MMS capability and 5 lines. I too was wondering so I asked. Extra lines and MMS will cost a monthly charge provided by another AppSumo Service from what I was told.

I have not used ShortySMS yet and it is more of a standby product. Also do not mind the low entry fee. Looked like Tier 1 is the only one you can get "Free" and I am not sure of that either, but will find out if I ever decide to use.

Not a big fan of SMS advertising or notifications on phones but purchased this more as an insurance policy for viruses are rampant on the net and even in emails. With that said we may be turning toward SMS and MMS with people actually paying attention in the future. Who knows.

Check it out you form your own opinion. Yes strange that I'd buy and not use, but with it being this price you can afford to do that and save it for the rainy days.

Hope this helps. Don't forget there also is a generous refund period :)

Really great tool!

I love this tool, so affordable and easy to use! Only thing I miss is the form feature. I would love to be able to create a « subscribe to receive sms alerts » form and add all the subscribed contact to a contact list, just like for sendFox.

And then perhaps you could integrate this feature with SleekBio?

Super Easy!

Okay I am not a tech person at all and I found this to be the easiest app ever. I already had Zapier and Twillo but I could never get them to work well together. I plugged in ShortySMS and set up the integration (soooo simple!), then set up my first campaign. AWESOME!! I already have reconnected with leads I thought where dormant. I am very happy with this application!

If ShortySMS ever adds a component I would suggest being able to text a single connect back within the application. That would be helpful.

Perhaps because I am not a tech person; something like this cannot be done and I just am asking too much.

Key Usability Features Missing

From the description & other reviews, the product seemed to be just what we needed. Unfortunately, this product is still clearly in beta and needs a lot more functionality before it can be used in other than an SME (small to medium enterprise) case.

Observations:

1) Only a single login which effectively means that if you get the tier 2 or tier 3 plans, only one person can manage / respond to incoming messages and create campaigns unless you share the login credentials with others in a team.

2) Replies coming back from a campaign are not being re-directed back to a campaign in-box or an inbox that is specific to the outgoing number.

3) Using Zapier, their aren't any fields in the ShortySMS zap to provide information about the "reply to" number and/or the campaign ID when using the "deliverable" trigger. This makes it impossible to create any meaningful triggers when someone replies to a campaign or sends an ad hoc message.

4) Very unintuitive process to change the list for a contact or add a contact to a list after the fact.

5) Product review says unlimited SMS but Twilio will still charge for messages sent. Although the product allows you to send as many messages as you want, there is still a cost associated with this.

Positives

1) 5 Tacos for a very simple SMS sending/reply system and the price is definitely right

Hey, madeitincanada! Thanks for your kind review here, and your great suggestions.

It seems like we are onto something with ShortySMS — and the flexibility and at-cost pricing we offer — and I'm glad that you agree. The bugs that you mentioned are great to know. In the future, per the AppSumo community guidelines, please make sure to message our Support team directly and we can work on tackling those quickly and easily.

We'll keep updating and improving ShortySMS. Can't wait to keep making the product better for you!
