Caution - Acumbamail's SMTP service is not secure. It doesn't use TLS and all passwords/auth tokens - and emails - are sent in plain text.

This opens up a huge amount of very serious potential issues including man-in-the-middle attacks, compromised account details, emails being read by third-parties, an increased risk of blacklisting etc.

Apart from the reputational damage to your brand or business if these things happen, there's also the potential for fines for non-compliance under GDPR and other similar laws that require you to take an appropriate level of security for your customers data, as well as for credentials. And sending them in plain text, unsecured, is not appropriate for any data. As a Spanish company, they should be fully aware of these laws. They claim to be on their site but...

I raised this with them last week when I found out and they just told me that's how their system works. When I asked them if they planned to fix it, they said it wasn't on their roadmap. When I asked for them to "please" explain their thinking - which I had asked in each email re the legal and security issues - they just stopped responding.

I've now taken it up with their Data Protection Officer. If that fails then I'll take it up with their parent company TeamSystem, a very large Italian company who I can't imagine will be impressed.

This is for the SMTP part of their service, but such an attitude does make me uncertain about how much to believe about the rest of their stated security and policy compliance, and leaves me uncomfortable using their service.

Other that that, it's a decent platform. But until they fix this issue, I'd seriously think twice about buying it if you care about your business, your reputation, your data, your customers, and the law. 3/5 but it would be 5/5 if they had a secure system and didn't respond to serious concerns by ignoring customers.
