Hard to understand for non techies

I'm having a hard time sticking with Alice. I've watched videos, tried to configure things, and... I've hit a wall almost all the time.

So far, it has only served me for two things:

1. Translating texts by clicking two keys on my keyboard.
2. Writing a 2000-word blog by chatting with Alice, although I can achieve this without Alice in any AI chat.

First: it worked perfectly on MAC.

Pros:

✅ Clean and beautiful UI.
✅ On MAC, it feels like a mature product.

Cons:

❌ If you don't know how code works, you're lost, like me. You'll have a local AI without needing a browser... and not much else.

❌ I can't find anything that Raycast doesn't do much more easily in my daily uses. Snippets for Zoom, Google Meets, Todoist, Fantastical, Capacities... I can achieve all of these very easily in Raycast. So, why do I need Alice? Moreover, it will cost me AI credits and a big headache to set up those Snippets.

❌The use of credits, in the end, is a monthly expense. Today, chatting with Alice, I spent about $3 in 1 hour. I was experimenting with texts, images, etc., as if I were writing a real blog, nothing too heavy. If I multiply those $3 by 30, it will be almost $100/month to maintain Alice... and that's without having really taken advantage of it because I can't even set up an automatic Zoom with Pabbly via Webhook.

❌ There is no synchronization between devices. In my case, I bought TIER 3 to have Alice on my Mac Studio and my MacBook Air. My surprise was great when I installed it on the second device and realized that the snippet I had on the Mac Studio would have to be configured from scratch on my other device again. The founder was kind and explained that it's a privacy issue and that they are working on it. He also said there was a way to export the entire app library on one device and import it on the other... unfortunately, it exceeds my knowledge.

I compare this app with Raycast because they are actually quite similar. But while I can easily do things with Raycast with my limited tech knowledge, with Alice it's incredibly difficult to understand what I'm doing.

I think the potential is very high. In fact, if they managed to be a Raycast alternative, I would be very interested in maintaining this LTD. But... Raycast costs $8/month. In less than a week, I will have spent that on API usage costs with Alice.

I don't know, maybe I'm not understanding Alice at all. Not just in terms of configuring it, but in terms of the product and its capabilities.

I hate giving it 3 tacos, I really wanted to love this.

Dear AlfaROI, thanks so much for the review 💚 We feel super pumped to be compared to Raycast, as we love this tool! And we also know, that Alice has much more to offer.

I totally understand the confusion, as I don't think it's possible to get the most of Alice only by using it for 1 day. In fact this is a stunning review if I take this into account - you've managed to accomplish a lot!

I am confident, that if you give Alice few more days, watch our playlists on YouTube and be a bit more patient, even as a non-technical person, you could accomplish a lot more and understand it's potential.

Regarding the cons:
1 / "Local AI without browser" is a big deal for us. If you'd discovered multiple models, Snippets and ability to run them via keyboard shortcuts, and adding assistants, this makes all the difference.

2 / Raycast offers only limited integrations, while Alice allows to integrate 1000+ tools. You won't also access models like Claude 3.5 without plug ins, you don't have Assistants etc.

3 / My monthly credit bill is always under ChatGPT $20 subscription and I talk to Alice hundred times a day. But there's a learning curve to spending tokens I agree. You doesn't have to always use the most expensive models. For some of my tasks I use 3.5 turbo, groq, and even free local Ollama.

4 / There's a manual way to sync Alice instances for now, and we're working on automatic one. There's always a tradeoff though. Most users appreciate privacy in Alice and want their conversation to stay on their device only, and we totally get that. With sync feature, that would be close to impossible. But we're working on a solution there :)

Thanks again!
