I honestly believe that I am not in a position to really provide a comprehensive review of this AppSumo deal, since I only played with "Alter" for a couple hours, so far. So if you want to save yourself 5 minutes of read, here is the short version:

"Alter is Agentic AI baked into the MacOs System - If you own a Mac, give it a try."

What does that actually mean?
So we are all pretty new to "agents" and we all sort of believe that this will be the future, right? Some may have spend some time already with Openclaw or Hermes as I did, and many other "Agentic Systems" are constantly coming out. No matter what you choose, the question is always, what do I want the agent to do for me? And that use-case can be personal, or business related, to simplify things a bit.

MacOS, in my opinion, is designed as a dual-purpose operating system for both personal use and professional workloads. An while MacOs looks and feels stunning on the surface, most of us only use a fraction of whats possible. The real power is under the hood, where you find a "twin-turbocharged super OS".

"Alter" is giving you AI Agent capabilities to use MacOs to its fullest, connect things with the help of AI, and much, much more.

The best, "Alter" is designed to be used directly by talking to the LLM/ agent, but can also be used with keyboard.

What Makes Alter Exceptional (The Pros)

1. True Deep System Integration
The "#1" standout feature of Alter is how perfectly AI is baked directly into the macOS environment. It doesn't feel like a standard third-party app running in a sandboxed window; it acts as an intelligent overlay that fully understands your system context, and that really sets it apart from other agentic platform that come with a broader approach.

2. Apple-Level Design Aesthetics
The visual execution of the app is stunning. The aesthetic and UI layout look pretty much identical to a native designed Apple product. The best part, you get a "Native Tool Manager" & "Action Editor", which includes a central hub to manage built-in macOS applications (like Finder, Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Keynote, Mail) + Tools for automation.

3. A Boundless Landscape of Possibilities
An impressive suite of pre- configured MCP servers (GitHub, Exa, fal.ai...) + community-built actions/ skills. Tons of features and possibilities.

4. Enterprise-Grade Engineering from a Indie Team
Massive respect goes out to the developer team behind this project. The stability, responsiveness, and premium finish of Alter is simply fascinating. I am not a developer but of what I see, "Alter" give the distinct impression that a massive, well-funded Apple engineering division built it. Knowing it was actually pulled off by a tiny team in the French Pyrenees is simply amazing and deserves the highest praise. Great job guys!

5. 2000+ tools included, makes this an automation monster. (In a good way.)

Areas for Improvement (The Cons)

The Missing Piece: High-Quality Learning Material
While Alter has near-infinite potential, at the same time it comes with a very steep learning curve. For an application this complex and capable, comprehensive and highly accessible onboarding material is an absolute necessity. And even you offer a 30 minute free onboarding, which appreciated, many users will simply not do it.

You seem like serious developers, but the marketing of "Alter" could use improvement, in my opinion. If I could suggest something, it would be to think about to outsource the marketing & tutorial part, if you do not have the time to do it yourself. Maybe ask within your community.

When customers buy a software they always ask, how will this make my life easier/ my business better? And based on the answer they make a decision. If users end up with a steep learning curve and hard to get any success, we get frustrated, give up and move on. And for you guys from "Alter" that is a huge missed opportunity, especially since you have a chance to be here on AppSumo. So I hope you can improve a bit on this part, because "Alter" is really, really a great piece of software.

Maybe integrate the "Alter Knowledgeable/ Docs" deeper into system, so the LLMs/ Agents can teach us "Alter". (Just found "Help" function -> solved)

The Verdict
Alter is a foundational shift in how humans interact with macOS. If Sam & Co can refine their educational content with clear, narrated, and structured tutorials, it will easily be a flawless 5-star product and clear winner.
Even with the learning curve, it is highly recommended for anyone looking to build a high-utility AI workflow on a Mac. I see this deal is running out in roughly 2 weeks - and I would certainly suggest any Mac owner to give it a chance. "Alter" is much more Apple Intelligence than the product from Cupertino.

And for "Alter" I wish it to grow and to come back to AppSumo, maybe towards the end of the year.

Initially, I found the app quite annoying. There were so many windows popping up everywhere, and the AI kept trying to record my screen when I went to YouTube. Plus, most of the shortcuts conflicted with those I use in Ableton Live.

However, I’ve been using it more and more, fine-tuning the options I need and want. I’ve actually found the AI to be one of the most powerful and useful I’ve used in a while. Tasks I give it are done at almost 100% accuracy every time.

A few things I’d change:

1. When I give the AI a directory to work with, it goes through and asks for permissions for every subfolder and file. It’s a lot, and I’m not sure if this is a setting I need to adjust.
2. Workspaces should be in a buried directory, perhaps in the Documents or Username folder.

Other than that, I highly recommend this purchase.

Alter is what Alice could have been if they made it easier to use.

I had fun using the app.

The only issues / requests that I have:
We need to be able to add more than one account to an app. For example, it is great that Gmail is a natively integrated app, but you can only add one Gmail account (as far as I can tell). The other alternative is to aggregate all your accounts in Apple Mail. TBH, I do not use Apple Mail and would like to keep it that way. However, I could make an exception.

Please allow access to some features via Telegram or another interface that supports mobile use.

5 Tacos. This tool is something else.

The voice to command feature completely changed how I work on my Mac. I literally just speak and Alter does the rest. No more typing prompts or switching between apps. Just say it and it happens.

What really blew my mind is scraping website info and extracting data using just voice actions. I pointed it at a page spoke my intent and got structured results instantly. That alone saved me hours of manual copy and paste.

BYOK is included so you can plug in your own API keys and use whatever model you want. No lock in. Your keys your models your workflow. And with Fal MCP integration you can generate images right from Alter without opening another tool. It just works.

Unlimited meeting transcription is another big one. Record transcribe and get summaries with action items all locally on your Mac. No bots no third party cloud services eating up your data.

Alter has so much potential it is honestly hard to describe in one review. Every time I use it I discover something new it can do. The integration with apps I already use the context awareness of what is on my screen and the speed of execution make it feel like a true copilot not just another AI chatbot.

I cannot list all the positive things here because there are simply too many. The team is responsive the product keeps improving and the value for what you pay is insane.

Do not just take my word for it. Try it yourself. You will understand why people are raving about this one.

I've always wanted to chat with my mac, this is the closest thing and it can upload youtube videos too! lol

Wanted to leave a review earlier but didn't know what to say as it can do most of the stuff i throw at chatgpt, claude and perplexity. It sometimes throws an error and that is because the input total size has reached it limit.... just make a new chat and it start over.

The biggest advantage I would say is the optimized credit usage, it not like claude that will eat up all tokens. Is it perfect? not yet.. but it gets the work done faster. It it seems to be getting better the more i use it.

I took the bet that this would be one of those hidden gems, and i think i made the right choice. support is very responsive and I do hope that this will prosper as it is a good tool to have. I just wish it would work on my phone.

It was a struggle at the start but setting up a call with the team will be a huge help seeing what alter can do. I've gradually upgraded and will go for top tier before this goes away.
