Q: Can we get subtitles or text transcription from videos already on YouTube, or do you need to upload the file ...

directly from your computer to your service?

A: Hi!

Thank you for your question.

It is not yet possible to get a transcription or subtitles from videos that are already on YouTube. You can only upload files that are on your computer directly.

Hope that helps!

This is quite a big limitation for me, as it slows down a creators workflow if we have to upload the video file twice (once to youtube and then to Amberscript for transcription).

For comparison: Happyscribe (which had an LTD here) has a lot more video import options including import from YouTube video link, G Drive, YouTube Channel integration, Vimeo, Dropbox, Box, Zoom, etc.

We understand that it is not an ideal workflow to upload files both on YouTube and on Amberscript. We will consider that for the future updates. Thank you.

Hi, Chad. Fellow Sumo-ling here. Did you know that YouTube auto-transcribes videos? Videos that are uploaded to YouTube will have this feature turned on by default. You can find the transcriptions in the "..." options for each video within your YouTube video manager. They produce the transcriptions right after the video gets uploaded, so if you've already uploaded a video, there should be one.

In Premiere Pro you can produce transcriptions of your videos before you upload them, using the Speech-to-Text tool (under Window > Text). It makes transcriptions and captions, and can burn the text into your video. You can edit the text's font, style, color, and placement in the video. You can also export the text, with time codes, into srt, txt, and csv. It's accurate, and you can go in and correct any mistakes. I just discovered this while comparison shopping and considering buying Amberscript. Since I'm already paying for Premiere every month, I think I'll stick with that.
