Q: What can we do with the backup files?
Can we restore the website without your plugin using those files or are we Vendor Locked we weird file formats?

May 14, 2024A: Hello,
We use our own archiving format (SGBP) but we provide extractors for it, so you can extract the files anytime you want.
Anyway, we think it won't be necessary to use the extractors, as you can simply install a clean WP anywhere you want, import the backup file and restore it.

Artavazd
The backup files are executable? They don't need to plugin?
And where are these extractors?
I would advise you providing detailed replies instead of making people ask questions for weeks on end before understanding how things work.
Hope you take this feedback seriously.
Sorry if my answer was not clear enough.
The backup files are not executables, they are of our own custom-made file format called SGBP.
These files can be extracted by using our own extractor software, which can be downloaded from the following link:
https://backup-guard.com/downloads
An alternate solution is:
Whenever your website crashes and your admin panel is not accessible at all, you can:
1) Install a fresh WordPress
2) Install BackupGuard plugin
3) Import the backup (which you have downloaded previously or uploaded to cloud)
4) And restore.
Your website will be restored to the point when the backup was actually created.

Artavazd
On your previous reply you made it seem like the plugin is not needed twice. And everything is super easy.
You even detailed the steps and said all was needed was a fresh installation of WP.
This just just super confusing.
So in the end am I right, we are vendor locked right?
But you said there's an extractor option, is there any good tutorial on it?
I would like to see detailed step by step how it works.
Hello David.
This is Susie stepping in for Artavazd.
First, you can check the following article showing how to extract the SGBP file: https://help.backup-guard.com/en/article/extract-sgbp-archive-hwyeo1/
The extractor itself can be downloaded from here: https://backup-guard.com/downloads/
It is indeed easy to extract a backup file.
However, to be able to restore the website our plugin should be installed on the fresh WP install as well, as already mentioned before.
Sorry for any confusion.
So this sucks, it means we are vendor locked. If we want to stop using the plugin or can't use the plugin our backups are worth for nothing.

Learn how to do it either.
I am assuming you guys are naive, and made it this way because you just don't know what you are doing.
But maybe this is just an unethical practice, it's hard to believe you are vendor locking out of naivete.
Dear David, I am not sure why you wish to backup with our plugin and restore with another one.
In any case, thank you for the suggestion we will surely check the article and consider making some changes for the future.
Each and every honest feedback is taken into account, so thank you once more.
