I am one of the unfortunate AppSumo customers who bought the lifetime deal for Rootpal website hosting. They were decent for a while, but then their entire platform crashed in July for a week and all their sites went down. There was nothing I could do because I didn't have any recent backups, and neither did they. Doing backups by hand is so laborious, so I tend to forget about them or put them off. So I was held hostage until Rootpal restored my sites.

This motivated me to find a backup solution, and I remembered BackupSheep. I bought a tier-1 code and scheduled it for weekly backups of my database and all the files on my FTP.

Wouldn't you know it, but Rootpal got hacked on August 18 and all of their servers were deleted. Every single site was destroyed. My sites are still not up, as of August 31! And most people who do have their site restored are furious about how old the backups are, from June and July. Months of work, email archives, you name it, all gone!

Thankfully, I had my BackupSheep backups. I gave Rootpal more than a week to restore my site, and they've failed to communicate. As we speak I'm transferring my hosting to a VPS and importing the files and database. Should have done it sooner. Also should have done daily backups. Lesson learned. I'm just glad that I have the option to restore them somewhere else.
