Q: A general question of fellow Sumolings, with food for thought for the Canaapii team, and I write as an ...

appreciative AppSuo customer of over 10 years:

Startups rightly stress over their points of differentiation and competitive advantage. Yet, I find it offensive that Canapii would begin their About Us page with this: "Canapii is run by event experts that can code, rather than by geeky engineers that are still nervous in anticipation of their first keynote pitch."

Anybody else sees a dissonance between that opening statement and Canapii's coming over to *AppSumo*, to gain the support of a community of tech-friendly early adopters?

Some background, for context: I'm a startup founder with advanced degrees in engineering. While I may have specialized in scientific computing in my youth, I haven't had the skill sets to architect my app. What I *have had* is the humility to recognize that my platform wouldn't exist and my business wouldn't be growing as it is if not for the valuable, continued contributions of a committed tech team.

Some feedback, Canapii team: You may want to do better than make disparaging references to coders. I see your team page and worry that it's nothing but a group of "suits" – corporate execs at an events firm for whom this Covid-necessitated foray into tech may be more a *job* or project (from which they'd move on easily) than a *passion* (as is the case for coders with an ownership mindset).

I hope you are able to read a kind tone in these words, however critical they may be.

Good luck.

I wouldn't get too worked up about it. It's just a marketing message to their target market.

Canopii's target market is NOT Summolings. They want to sell to big corporations and event planners that have very deep pockets. You know this by looking at the number of account executives they are looking to hire in the near future.

Canopii's interest in Summolings (in my opinion) is specifically to find extremely tech-savy people to come in and try to break the software, find bugs, and offer up solutions (that's what we're good at 8-). When they make the BIG push to the Fortune 500 crowd they will then have a bullet-proof system to sell.

They only get one chance with that market. If the software isn't bullet-proof they risk way too much in terms of a failed launch and a bad reputation for bug-ware. And that lasts a long time.

Honestly, I'm not offended by the message at all.

I do have an opinion on how they are missing the mark on the current Appsumo Campaign...but that's a whole other story 8-)

Hi Tim!

Thank you for your message and feedback. The tiers that we are offering on AppSumo cater to different needs and budgets. Still, we are aware of all of the comments we are receiving here and will pass everything along for review so we can offer a better product and service.

We also appreciate your suggestions as the community's feedback is the best way for us to know in which areas we should focus on!

Thanks for chiming in with those well-reasoned, balanced thoughts!

I have to ask myself why I couldn't take a kinder view.

I suppose it's in part because we Sumolings evaluate not only the products (once we opt in), but also the people behind the products (would this deal have legs?), and I find myself unwilling to bet on the founding team out of the concern that early adopters, much like "geeky engineers" may come to be thought of dismissively and get shafted down the road.

Thank you for your reply!

I have answered above as well, but wanted to reiterate that we understand your position and that we truly appreciate all the feedback we've been receiving.

The deals here were meant to cater to everyone and it's not our intention to come across as rude to anyone here or anything similar. We really apologize that we may have given this impression.

By talking with the AppSumo community we are learning what features are the most requested and what can or can't be adjusted on our tiers here.

Thank you for understanding!

Thanks for listening, rather than react defensively to the harsh feedback.

I remain unwilling to take a bet on Canapii, for reasons that I described in my reply to @Tim79. Yet, I hope that something good comes out of your engaging with the AppSumo community.

Thank you for replying!

We do understand your position and thoughts regarding our AppSumo deals as well as how we initially approached this matter. As mentioned previously, we are very sorry if we gave you or anyone here the wrong impression.

Still, we do hope that you decide to try Canapii out in the future! And be sure that engaging with the community here has been very helpful to us.
