Turn a finished clip into a social-ready short

Disclaimer: I'm a paid product evaluator for AppSumo and received this tool for free to provide a detailed review. My opinions are entirely my own, and my compensation is not tied to the rating or taco score I give.

CaptionBolt is described as an AI captioning tool, but I think that undersells it a bit. What separates it from a basic subtitle generator is what happens after the transcript is created.

You bring it a video you have already decided to publish, and CaptionBolt handles that last stretch before it is ready for TikTok, Reels, Shorts or another social channel. It can transcribe the video, animate the captions, resize the frame, add B-roll or branding, create a cover and help draft the accompanying post.

I tested the core workflow from beginning to end. The transcription was accurately timed and even handled proper nouns correctly. I picked a caption style, watched the words animate in sync with the speaker, and exported a finished captioned MP4 without any problems.

The caption styling is particularly well done. There are currently 338 styles, but you can still change things such as the font, colors, motion and highlighted words rather than being stuck with a preset exactly as it comes. You can also correct names or other transcription mistakes before rendering without touching the original audio.

What I like about the approach is that CaptionBolt doesn't try to become another huge AI video editor. It starts with footage you have already chosen and concentrates on getting that clip ready to publish. It doesn't search long recordings for viral moments, translate captions or dub the audio. If those are the jobs you need done, you'll need something else. But if the clip is already sitting on your computer and you just need to finish it, the workflow is much more direct.

There are some useful finishing touches too. You can change between vertical, square and landscape formats, add your own logo, use a progress bar, bring in B-roll from Pexels or your own files, and create a cover without moving the project into another editor just for those final steps.

One change since my original test is worth mentioning. I had recommended that CaptionBolt add an API and webhooks so agencies could automate the workflow instead of manually uploading and checking every job. The current Tier 3 deal now includes a REST API, job webhooks and an MCP server for AI agents. I didn't test those during my original review, but it is good to see that automation has now been added.

The usage limits have also changed from what I originally reviewed. The AppSumo tiers now include 60, 400 or 1,200 processing minutes per month rather than a fixed lifetime pool. Successful transcription uses minutes based on the length of the video, and unused minutes don't roll over.

One thing buyers should know is that projects remain in the project list for 14 days. I would download the finished video and any transcript or subtitle files you want to keep rather than treating CaptionBolt as long-term video storage.

For me, CaptionBolt makes the most sense as the finishing step for short-form video. I can take a clip I've already recorded, get accurate animated captions on it, make it fit the social format I need, add the final touches and export something ready to post without resorting to a full video editor.

Hi there,

Thank you so much for this incredibly detailed and thoughtful review! As a founder, reading this is extremely rewarding because you completely nailed our core vision.

We intentionally didn't want to build just another bloated video editor. Our goal has always been to master that "last mile" of content creation—taking a clip you already love and making it social-ready as smoothly as possible.

I also want to give a special shoutout to your previous recommendation regarding the API and Webhooks! We took your feedback to heart, which is exactly why we rolled out the REST API, Webhooks, and MCP server for Tier 3. Your input directly helped make the product better for agencies and power users.

Finally, thank you for highlighting the 14-day project retention to the community. You are absolutely right—CaptionBolt is designed as a fast-processing engine rather than a long-term cloud storage drive, so downloading the finished files right away is the best workflow.

Thanks again for testing CaptionBolt so thoroughly and for helping us grow!

Best,
Matt
