Great idea, but not for me.

While I absolutely LOVE the idea behind it for a personal, 1-on-1 networking use case, I ultimately found the app/service hard to use.

Pros:
I'm not going to go too in-depth here because the concept is self-explanatory in both its utility and its benefit. It's a fantastic idea and I commend the team for working to make this app solve the problem.

Cons:
Here are my top 5 pain points.

1) LTD Terms | To start off, I do find it concerning that the AppSumo plan isn't tied to an actual user plan, but that's a more functional concern. I applaud the company for being responsive to the questions on this topic, and since I'm not prospecting on my personal accounts (and I don't have 5,000 connections at this point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ), I gave it a shot.

2) Windows App | LinkedIn connections don't work without the desktop app, but the desktop app isn't very good at conveying what it's doing. After connecting LinkedIn it looks like it's hung/done/whatever. So I figured I screwed something up and tried again. Now it throws an error. Frustrating, so I waited a bit and tried again, and now I'm back to nothing again. Contacts aren't starting to appear, no notes, nothing.

Eventually, I looked for the log file (it's in AppData\Roaming\Clay\logs) to see that it's scraping contacts, 10 at a time, but it doesn't tell you. Starting over throws up errors because LI is kicking the app out with authentication errors for doing the same thing over and over. A frustration, but once I knew what it was up to, I let it run for a while, and voila-- Contacts.

3) Integrations | The list of integrations isn't sufficient for someone intent on truly connecting their whole network. I email not on Google/MS/Apple, but even though it's IMAP/CardDav/CalDav there are no sync options. Even CSV import of contacts isn't supported. I think that's a big and important shortcoming.

4) Layout | I had a hard time navigating the different features of the app. It's mostly self-explanatory, but there are functions I can't figure out after a while of trying. Ex: How do you un-archive a contact? I found it once, no more.

5) Accounts | Usernames (email addresses) are case sensitive, but the AppSumo signup process passed the email address to Clay as all lowercase. So (while I don't care about capitalization), I was dismayed to discover I created a new, second Clay account when using my email (FirstLast@) to log in since my AS account was created as firstlast@. It's an edge-case problem, but took some time to figure out.

I wish the developers all the best, I think the tool has a lot of potential. But I'm not willing to let it grow with me since even basic interactions aren't delivering the utility I need.

Thank you for this excellent and thoughtful review (and thanks for trying Clay!).

I'm passing your feedback on Windows integrations troubles, UX, and Username issues to our team. Thank you for flagging them.
