AI coding that makes sure you understand the code

Disclaimer: I'm a paid product tester for AppSumo and received this tool for free to provide a detailed review. My opinions are entirely my own, and my compensation is not tied to the rating or taco score I give.

AI coding tools can help make software much faster, but there is an obvious downside. It becomes very easy to accept a change because it works without really understanding what the AI changed or why.

That is what Contral is trying to address. It adds a teaching layer to the coding process, explaining functions, patterns and decisions as you vibe code. You can also highlight code and ask for an explanation when you want to understand a particular section in more detail.

I think Defense Mode is one of the more interesting ideas here. Instead of simply showing you an explanation, Contral can ask you to explain the code back in your own words and give you feedback on whether you actually understood it. For someone learning to code, or even an experienced developer working in an unfamiliar codebase, I can see that being much more useful than simply accepting whatever the coding agent produced.

I can also see this being useful beyond learning. If you're a founder using AI to help build your product, there may come a point where an investor, technical advisor or due diligence reviewer starts asking questions about your codebase. You should be able to explain how the important parts work, why certain decisions were made and what the risks are. A tool that keeps pushing you to understand the code as you go can help you be much better prepared for those conversations.

You also don't have to replace the coding tools you already use. Contral can work alongside agents such as Claude Code and Codex through its editor extension. Your coding agent continues doing the coding, while Contral watches the changes and explains what happened. That separation makes a lot of sense to me because I can keep using the coding tool I prefer while adding the learning layer around it.

I did run into a couple of problems during testing. The Explain feature in the VS Code extension originally kept spinning without returning anything, and a link inside the desktop IDE was broken. The team fixed both issues, and I rechecked them successfully.

There are some current limits. The structured Learn Mode curriculum currently teaches Java only, although Build Mode and the code explanation features can work with other languages. On macOS, the desktop IDE currently requires Apple Silicon, while Windows and Linux versions are also available.

Overall, I think Contral is most interesting for people who want to use AI to code without becoming completely dependent on it. The AI can still help you move faster, but Contral keeps asking the question that most coding assistants don't: do you actually understand the code you're about to ship? A very useful tool for any founder or coder’s stack, with a lot of potential.

Hi AbeChallah, thanks for such a careful review. Glad Defense Mode and the teaching layer came through, and that Contral can sit alongside the coding agents you already use. Appreciate you flagging the VS Code Explain and desktop IDE link issues and confirming the fixes. You're right that structured Learn Mode is Java-only today; Build mode and the explanation features work across languages....
