Obsolete in a year or a game changer for life?

I’m going to preface this by saying I haven’t yet had a chance to implement and try cookieyes on my websites.

So this review is more of an analysis of my buying process decisions and why I chose to invest in cookieyes.

First... let’s get pricing and the seemingly restrictive plans out of the way. It took only 76 seconds to figure out some plans are far more beneficial than others when it comes to ROI (Hint: it’s Plan 3).

When I take a chance on an appsumo product my measuring stick is always to calculate one year of regular service fees for the tool - what I would pay to test it out for one full year. If the cost of lifetime deal is equal or under, it gets a green check to move forward. At $20 per domain per month, plans 1-3 fit that criteria for me, with plan 3 being the cost-averaged winner. So for the price of one license for a full year, I get 15 for life. Fair enough.

Now, as for upkeep and expansion costs that’s where it gets iffy... what happens next? Looking at the dashboard right now I don’t even see an option to purchase additional domains or credit packs to boost our allowed limits and usage. What happens when my website portfolio and needs grow?

Hopefully we get an answer on that soon enough as this might make or break my decision to stick with the deal.

Now for the elephant in the room and the “will it? will they?” risk factor...

Cookieyes seems like a very young tool by a very young team. The dashboard so far is very barebone and lacks clear options that are now expected of any appsumo deals (see above). The changes in deal terms to try and adjust shows the team is likely willing to compromise, but also inexperienced in that area. And the confusing message doesn’t help (answering a question about having the ability to switch domains later by saying “contact us and we’get you sorted! But it’s entirely at our discretion though” doesn’t exactly build trust... so where will cookieyes be in a year? Who knows.

And where will the cookie life be headed in the next 12 months? That’s even more of a gamble. Every day more and more countries implement stricter cookie and privacy laws. Tech companies are also making a statement and moving away from cookie usage altogether. Cookie laws seem to be here to stay, but are cookies on their way out to be phased out and replaced by alternate technologies? We’ll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile what is certain is any fine given by any government agencies for failure to comply with laws and regulations will dent anyone’s budget a lot more than investing in this lifetime deal, so to me the peace of mind is worth it and was probably the biggest factor in justifying the investment.

Just like privacy breach insurance and protection, cookie and privacy laws protection is, in my eyes, a cost of doing business responsibly in this digital age.
