Q: Where is contact data stored?

I have contact information with some personal/sensitive data that can't be on a cloud server - the data is in the notes field of the contact. Will that be transferred to your servers at all?

A: Hi cfdynamics,

I’ll provide a short and specific answer and, if you don’t mind, a bit of a longer philosophical one (as this is a discussion we’ve had a few times in the past with other people :) ).

Short answer:

100% of Covve’s data is handled by Microsoft’s Award winning, PCI-compliant Azure data centres and in accordance to GDPR. Notes on contacts are one of the fields that Covve syncs two ways with your phone’s address book

Long answer:
We built Covve for business professionals, people (like us) who we know value significantly the privacy of their data and their contacts. For many of us our address book is an asset that we build throughout our careers and something that’s worth A LOT to us.

As such privacy is built in across our business model, our product and our systems. In short… we never reuse, sell or in any way use your data for anything apart from providing the service. We really do think this sets us apart from many other services.

Its also worth saying that we’re GDPR compliant (actually, we were almost entirely compliant prior to GDPR even appearing on the scene :) ) You can have a look at our privacy policy and terms here: https://covve.com/privacy

Now, regarding storing contacts in the cloud, many people are surprised when they realise that despite all efforts their contacts are actually already in the cloud. For example, iOS uses iCloud by default and Android Gmail. Even companies are increasingly using Office365. And for good reason… the risk of having such a precious asset just stored on a device which can be lost or damaged is not acceptable.

Of course I’m not saying that this is the case for everyone and of course there are scenarios where the only solution that’s appropriate would be to store contacts locally.

Apologies for such a lengthy answer!

All the best,
Alex

Thank you for the thoughtful and thorough answer :)

Yeah, they are in the cloud already - I just don't know you yet :) And I'm sure you're not going to sell the data, just worried about a breach - they happen.

Sensitive data can range from a birth date (some try to hide their age... imagine that?), while it might also be a security code to their front gate for a friend or special customer, or that they found out they have cancer on x date, etc. and so much more... so, as always there needs to be a certain level of trust - that's what it is all about, so I appreciate your response.

I will have to consider what information is there and if there is a better way to store it, or as with GDPR, delete it if it really isn't necessary.

Thanks!!
Jason
