We've actually been around for just as long as Clay has, and most of our core features appeared on Databar a long time ago before we even heard about Clay, so to answer your question it wasn't built as a Clay alternative, but it is one now. :)

Databar is also different from Clay in many ways, including our connectors, pricing, and user flow. You will also see many more differences between Clay & us show up in the next 3-4 months, we have a pretty heavy & exciting roadmap which we're already executing on!

One thing I should mention is we haven't released our generalized web scraper yet (if you're looking for a Claygent-type feature), but we are releasing it in the next month or so.
