Q: How does the content optimization tool compare to surfer seo?

What does it do?

Does it analyze top ten results and give us recommendations so we have the highest chance of outranking them?

A: Great question (and very close guess).

The Content Optimization tool compares your content to the top 20 performing results for a given search query. It then analyzes the topics (not just keywords) present in your content vs your competitors' content and gives you a clear blueprint of the topics you need to add in order to improve your ranking.

It would be great to be able to pick how deep you want to analyze the competition. Top 20 is really only helpful if you're ranking worse than #20.

If you are ranking #5, you are recommended to only analyze the top 3.

Maybe add functionality for comma separated domains?

Just a thought...

Great idea, and I'll shoot that over to the product team.

In the meantime, one creative way to switch things up is to only crawl a specific website (instead of the top 20 results). So for example, if I wanted to write an article about Inbound Marketing, I could exclusively crawl the Hubspot website and be confident that the research in my documents is top notch.
