A Bumpy Ride

I’ve been a GetTerms subscriber for a year and had a generally positive experience—so when I saw their lifetime deal on AppSumo, I was interested. It seemed like a good opportunity to lock in long-term access. Unfortunately, it turned into a frustrating experience that ended with me refunding the lifetime deal and cancelling my annual plan as well.

Here’s what went wrong:

Magic Links
GetTerms still relies entirely on a “magic link” login system—meaning the only way to access your account is through a link sent to your email. If that email gets lost or deleted, you’re stuck. There’s no password login, no way to reset, and no fallback. It’s not just inconvenient—it’s a serious usability and security issue.

Deleting/renaming
As a lifetime deal customer, I quickly discovered I couldn’t rename or delete an existing policy package—basic features that are available to regular subscribers. This limitation wasn’t disclosed beforehand, and the only workaround is to contact support. It felt like an intentional downgrade for AppSumo users.

Annual plans
With standard login and full control, the annual plan had been fine—until I saw how much smoother things could be if GetTerms had applied consistent standards across all user types. The contrast between the two experiences made me rethink my whole relationship with the product.

Transparency
None of these restrictions were mentioned on the AppSumo deal page. And when questioned, GetTerms defended the magic link login as “common practice.” That might be true in some cases, but not when it’s the *only* option and executed this poorly.

Final Verdict
I’d give their core product 3 tacos—it works, but the user experience needs serious improvement. The AppSumo lifetime deal, however, was a letdown. Poor login design, missing features, and lack of clear disclosure convinced me to walk away from both the lifetime and yearly plans.

This whole experience was a reminder that convenience and transparency matter just as much as the product itself.
