Full of potential BUT needs to be more user friendly

Grist is a very powerful tool and more versatile than Airtable. It has a lot of potential to be THE tool every company needs.

I was impressed with the quality of the product, especially when compared with Stackby, another Appsumo product currently on sale. Unlike Stackby, Grist has very little bugs and glitches. Their support is responsive and works in the US time zone.

However, I haven't been able to take full advantage of it because of the following:

1) The tutorials go over things way too fast. I watched them several times and still couldn’t follow completely. The written instructions aren't much better.

2) Airtable is very successful because it makes things so easy and intuitive that even a lay person can easily set up their own system. But not Grist. There is no way anyone who hasn't taken a programming class before will know how to use python, formula, etc, at least not very easily. If you want to attract the mass market users, you've got to make it more user friendly. Right now, it is very far from it... unless you just want to attract the engineer-entrepreneur users.

3) It still needs more comparable features, e.g. calendar, conditioned-based coloring, webhook, formatting options, etc.

I hope I will eventually figure out how to use it fully, so I can update this review with how useful it can be.

Thank you for the honest review!

You are right, Grist has a steep learning curve. We try hard to make it easy to start with, and to have good documentation to allow anyone to grow with it. But some functionality really does open up only to developers (such as going beyond Excel functions in the Python formulas, or building custom widgets). And there are some stumbling blocks in usability and documentation which we need to smooth over.

Meanwhile, please ask us questions when you hit a stumbling block. The community forum is the best place for it: https://community.getgrist.com/.

And if you have ideas for improvements to documentation, videos, or the product itself, please share -- we are particularly receptive to ideas on making Grist more user-friendly!
