Q: Security Question Hi, not an expert here on video.

I bought a Tier 3, and it seems all your videos use HLS streaming. Does this mean this is encrypted and protected against downloads? How does this differ with Publitio’s HLS encryption, if any?

What’s the benefit of DRM in Tier 5 vs non-Tier 5?

Thanks!

A: Hi BSW,

Thanks for asking this interesting question.

HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) is an HTTP-based adaptive bitrate streaming communications protocol Apple Inc. developed.

The HLS URLs do not protect against downloads. You must enable DRM to ensure your video URLs are encrypted and protected against downloads.

Publitio's HLS encryption is called DAM, similar to Gumlet's DRM.

We provide truly unlimited DRM in Tier-5 only. Check out more about DRM here - https://appsumo.com/products/gumlet-video/questions/hi-please-explain-clearly-the-two-fea-1183514/?r=t#1183555

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Follow up question:

You provide unlimited DRM at Tier 5. Why do I then need FairPlay certificates, and you provide DRM for up to 5 videos?

My main question is protection against download - on desktop and mobile. What is needed?

That's a great one.

So we provide unlimited DRM support across devices/browsers.

But for DRM to work on Apple, you must purchase a separate license to secure your content on Apple devices. We need Fairplay keys to provide encryption and decryption at the hardware level. You can read more about how DRM works at https://docs.gumlet.com/docs/drm.

We provide our Fairplay credentials for Sumo-lings to try out how it works; that's why there is a limit of 5 videos.

To protect your content against downloads, you need Gumlet DRM integration, Google Widevine keys, and an Apple Fairplay certificate.

To make this sweeter for the AppSumo family:
- Gumlet DRM is already included in Tier-5
- Google Widevine keys (free for Sumo-lings, as we absorb the licensing cost)
- Apple Fairplay ($99/month, which needs to be bought directly from Apple)

We are looking forward to protecting your content.

Thanks.
