Make your Claude Code and Codex limits go further

Disclaimer: I'm a paid product tester for AppSumo and received this tool for free to provide a detailed review. My opinions are entirely my own, and my compensation is not tied to the rating or taco score I give.

Claude Code and Codex can burn through a surprising amount of your usage allowance reading long logs, command output, JSON, and files that don't always need to be sent in full. Headroom compresses that material locally before the coding agent receives it, while keeping the original available if the agent needs it.

During our testing, Headroom ran quietly through roughly six hours of Claude Code work in the background. The dashboard showed the tokens saved and the estimated dollar savings. For someone using a subscription, the benefit is getting more coding time out of the plan they're already paying for. API users can also reduce their token costs.

The project learnings feature is another reason I find Headroom interesting. If your coding agent tries a command, gets an error, and eventually finds the correct way to do something, Headroom can save that information in the project's instruction files. The next session can then use what was learned instead of repeating the same mistakes.

No learnings appeared during the original beta test, despite several hours of use. The team says they've since improved how reliably those learnings are captured. They've also expanded the documentation and onboarding to explain the benefits beyond token savings and why the optional add-ons aren't enabled by default.

The compression engine itself is open source, so what you're paying for here is the desktop app that takes care of the setup and maintenance. You get automatic updates, a dashboard for tracking savings and usage, project learnings, and a way to enable additional tools without installing and configuring everything yourself.

One compatibility note: the earlier version I checked failed to install on an Intel Mac. The current documentation lists Intel support. I haven't retested that particular setup with the newer installer and have it running now on my Intel Mac and already see savings reported.

Overall, Headroom pays for itself if you spend a lot of time in Claude Code or Codex (who doesn't) and regularly run into usage limits. I like that it works in the background without asking you to change how you code. The compression is the immediate benefit, and the project learnings could make it even more valuable as you continue working on the same codebase.

Thanks so much for taking the time to put Headroom through its paces, and for such a thorough and fair review!

Really glad to hear it's now running on your Intel Mac and already reporting savings. Thanks for going back to retest that.

You're right that learnings didn't show up for you during the beta. That feedback directly shaped the improvements we've made since, so we'd love to hear how it goes as you keep working in the same codebase. If anything feels off, just reach out and we'll dig in.

Thanks again for the kind words, and happy (longer) coding!
