Our API which is due out in a couple of weeks will allow you to download your employee data (and associated data) as a JSON file for storage.

But as far as keeping employees, we recommend that you simply mark them as 'Terminated' or inactive in HR Partner, and you can still keep all their data there, and they will not be counted towards your active employee count when adding new employees in the system. Terminated employees don't come up on a lot of reports, and they cannot be invited to participate in checklists or login to their portal, but their records are still on the system for you to look up.
