Interactive Shell Update: Local-First IDE with Web Terminals

👋 Hey Sumo-lings!

We have a major Interactive Shell update to share. Over the past year, we’ve been rebuilding and expanding Interactive Shell based heavily on feedback from our users. This is much more than a visual refresh. The infrastructure, development environment, project system, editors, security model, and supported workflows have all changed significantly.

⚠️ Important for existing AppSumo code holders

If you already own an Interactive Shell AppSumo code, you will need to re-apply your existing code to your Interactive Shell account.

After logging in, go to:

Account → Settings → AppSumo Code

Enter your existing code and apply it to your account. You do not need to purchase another code. Re-applying the code simply ensures that your AppSumo entitlement is correctly associated with the new Interactive Shell platform.

🚀 Moving from VPS infrastructure to dedicated servers

One of the biggest changes has happened behind the scenes. Interactive Shell has moved away from its previous VPS-based infrastructure and is now running on Dedicated servers. This gives us significantly more control over the environments powering Interactive Shell and provides a stronger foundation for terminals, development environments, application previews, compilers, packages, and project workloads. The move also allows us to focus more closely on performance, workload isolation, reliability, and security as the platform continues to grow.

🐧 Persistent Linux terminals

The Interactive Linux Terminal remains one of the core parts of Interactive Shell, and terminal persistence now depends on your AppSumo tier. 1 AppSumo code → 24-hour terminal persistence | 2 codes → 72 hours | 3 codes → 7 days. This means your terminal environment can remain available between sessions for the applicable period, making it much more practical for installing packages, configuring development environments, compiling software, running tools, and working on tasks that take more than one session.

🔐 Interactive Shell is now Local-First

Another major change is how project files are stored. Interactive Shell will no longer provide permanent cloud storage for IDE project files. Instead, we have moved toward a Local-First development model, where your projects can remain on your own computer while Interactive Shell provides the browser-based development environment around them.

This gives you greater control over your own source files and reduces your dependence on proprietary cloud project storage. Your files remain yours and can stay on your machine, while Interactive Shell provides the IDE, terminal, previews, development tools, and AI-assisted workflows. We believe this is a stronger long-term direction for a developer-focused platform and also allows us to reduce unnecessary permanent storage of user project files on our infrastructure.

It is important to distinguish this from terminal persistence. Your projects can remain local while your Interactive Shell Linux environment can still persist for 24 hours, 72 hours, or 7 days depending on your AppSumo tier.

⚛️ React + Vite and modern project development

One of the most requested improvements is support for modern project-based development. Interactive Shell now goes well beyond individual snippets and simple HTML files. You can work with React + Vite projects, proper multi-file structures, development servers, application previews, and more realistic frontend development workflows.

The IDE itself has also evolved considerably. We are continuing to improve file navigation, project handling, tabs, terminal integration, application previews, program input and output, editor workflows, and modern framework support.

The goal is simple: open your browser and start building.

📐 Advanced LaTeX editing

Interactive Shell is also expanding beyond traditional programming. We now support an advanced LaTeX editing environment designed for technical, scientific, academic, and professional document creation. Rather than treating .tex files like ordinary source code, the LaTeX experience is being developed specifically around document workflows. This makes Interactive Shell increasingly useful not only for developers, but also for students, researchers, engineers, academics, and technical writers.

🤖 AI-assisted development

AI is becoming a much more integrated part of Interactive Shell. Rather than simply placing a chatbot next to the editor, our goal is to make AI useful within the actual development workflow. This includes helping users generate code, understand existing code, debug problems, modify projects, understand errors, and build applications more efficiently.

We are also continuing to develop AI Builder as another way to quickly start and work on projects.

☁️ Why are we removing cloud project storage?

We understand that this is an important change for our original AppSumo customers, and we want to be transparent about it. Persistent cloud project storage was part of the original Interactive Shell offering. Since then, however, the product has evolved substantially. Rather than continuing to invest resources into building and maintaining another proprietary cloud file-storage service, we have chosen to focus those resources on the areas where Interactive Shell can provide more value: development environments, persistent Linux terminals, modern frameworks, Local-First projects, AI-assisted development, advanced LaTeX editing, and interactive learning.

We believe keeping project files under the user's control while providing the development environment around them is a better fit for what Interactive Shell has become.

🔐 A more security-conscious architecture

Our new architecture combines dedicated infrastructure, Local-First projects, and reduced permanent server-side storage of user project files. This gives us greater control over the infrastructure while reducing the amount of source code that needs to be stored permanently on our servers. No system can remove every security risk, but this architecture provides a much stronger foundation for improving security, isolation, reliability, and privacy.

🌱 Interactive Shell today

Interactive Shell started primarily as an online terminal and lightweight browser IDE. Today, it is becoming a broader development platform built around an online IDE, persistent Linux terminals, React + Vite development, Local-First projects, advanced LaTeX editing, AI-assisted coding, AI Builder, project-based workflows, interactive learning, and dedicated server infrastructure. And we are continuing to build.

📦 Migrating your data from the legacy Interactive Shell

We have also kept access to the legacy Interactive Shell website to help existing users transition to the new platform. You can find the Legacy link in the footer of the website. If you still have projects or files stored in the previous Interactive Shell system, use the legacy site to access that data and move anything you want to keep into your new Local-First workflow. We strongly encourage existing users to review their legacy projects and transfer any important source code, documents, or other files they want to continue working with. The legacy website is there to make that transition easier rather than leaving existing users without access to their previous work. Legacy website will be made read-only/ deleted from the 1st of Jan 2027.

❤️ Thank you, Sumo-lings!

Many of these changes came directly from feedback, feature requests, reviews, bug reports, and conversations with our early users. We also understand that replacing cloud project storage is a meaningful change from the original offering, which is why we wanted to clearly explain both what is changing and what Interactive Shell has become in its place. Our focus going forward is: We want Interactive Shell to provide a capable development environment that you can access from almost anywhere while keeping your actual project files under your control. If you already own an AppSumo code, please remember to log in and go to: Account → Settings → AppSumo Code. Then re-apply your existing code or codes. There is no need to purchase replacement codes.

Thank you for being part of Interactive Shell Community and for helping shape where the platform goes next. 🙏
