Q: I really like the app interface.

Currently, I use an app called Voicenotes, which allows me to use one account across multiple devices. I have it installed on my iPhone, iPad, and there's also a web interface that I use when inspiration strikes. The web interface is the most advanced, with new features that eventually make their way to the iOS devices.

I paid $50 for a lifetime deal and I'm quite satisfied with it. However, the user interface isn't as appealing as yours and you have a few writing features I wish were built into Voicenotes, which is why I was considering your AppSumo lifetime deal. Unfortunately, the licensing terms are VERY HARD to swallow. It's disappointing, and while I understand the need to monetize, I'm puzzled how Voicenotes can still offer their lifetime deal, which isn't available through AppSumo, on a per user basis.

I'm intrigued by your app's various writing scenarios, especially since they are designed by someone with a background in linguistics.

I don't understand the need to pay per device because I won't be using it simultaneously on different devices. It makes more sense to link it to an account. If you're targeting businesses with multiple users, charging per user makes perfect sense. But charging an individual who uses the app on multiple devices but not at the same time seems excessive.

I would purchase the deal if this policy would change once cross-device syncing is launched. If I have to pay for another license just to access content from my phone on the web, it doesn't make sense. I would buy two licenses if one was for me and one for my wife, but not if it's limited to just two devices. It should be about the number of users, not the devices. Trust your clients to act accordingly and not share an account.

Is this something you would consider revising? Enforcing single sign-ins could help reduce the potential for abuse.

Thanks for getting back to me. It's tough to accept that I need more licenses, but I get that startups need support, both financially and through word of mouth. I've been messing around with the app today and, even though I'm a bit reluctant, I have to say I'm impressed. I'll go for the tier 3 plan so I'm set for when the web app launches, and I can use it on my phone and iPad. I'll also...

share a license with my wife. This is to help support development. I really hope the syncing features come out soon and work well. It would be awesome to have a chat feature with the notes because when I'm dumping a lot of info into the app, it's helpful to be able to ask questions about past entries, whether they're simple to-do lists or more complex stuff like...

monthly summaries or biographical content. Custom prompts for new transcripts or modified transcripts would also be great.

Awesome, we're so glad you liked the app, that's great to hear! 🙂
We won't disappoint, look forward to the web version! :))
As for custom prompts, they're just about ready, we're working on them right now!

I completely agree with you. I bought Voicenotes as well and find it hard to swallow that each license is per device, not user. Especially with an app like this that essentially requires both a phone and computer to use effectively. With voicenotes you have unlimited devices, custom prompts and the ability to chat with your notes for $50... letterly has a nice UI and output but $200 for 3 devices?

Thank you! Please allow us to explain from our side.

This isn't about any mercantile desires on our part. What we are offering on AppSumo is an unprecedentedly cheap deal for us, a promotion we are unlikely to repeat because it doesn't bring us profit. Instead, it helps us build a user base that provides feedback and, hopefully, will share our app with their network in the future.

But such a structure, where the price increases with the number of devices, allows us to maintain operational efficiency, continue working, and create new features. Additionally, let me clarify this: in your personal account, you will be able to remove and add devices.

This way, for example, you can let a friend use it for a month and then switch it back to your phone, and later to your computer, and so on. You can choose flexibly. This is a bonus to ensure you don't think it's strictly about your devices only.

So, you can get 10 codes and distribute Letterly to a team of 20 people. Out of those 20, you can keep 3 devices for yourself. That's the idea.

I hope this won't cause you too much inconvenience!

And look at it from this perspective: Letterly is available for $590 for 20 people ($29,5 per person), if each has one device. Isn't it amazing that you can provide it to the whole office? :)

I'm not sold on this reply, sorry. You're getting a lot of push back from people too and keep offering the same response. If 1 license is not per user, it should at least provide 2 codes so the app can be accessed from both mobile and desktop. You're not gonna survive charging monthly per device as everyone who uses apps like these use them on multiple devices.

I'm sorry I didn't convince you! Let's try to look at it differently: we offer a lifetime deal for typical 2 devices at $108. This is our price point that allows us to survive. $59 is a 50% discount if you're willing to use just one device.

Hopefully, we'll be able to create even more value to make this seem like a good deal!

Feel free to contact us at hi@letterly.app. Additionally, there's a link to Calendly in the app if you'd like to chat face-to-face. It can be helpful when you have a lot of thoughts :))
