Katalist Review (Tier 2): A Masterclass in Deception
This wasn't just a disappointment. This was a straight-up rug pull disguised as a lifetime deal. Katalist sold us dreams of video storytelling, promised video generation, transitions, animations, even teased roadmap features that never came. What we got was a hollow shell. No functioning video generator, no animations, not even basic transitions. Just hype, excuses, and a "we're working on it" loop from their Discord mods.
They stripped out user styles. They ghosted their original Storytelling Studio plan. Then they rebranded the entire tier system like we wouldn’t notice. Tier 2 was supposed to include video generation. That’s why we bought it. Now we’re told to be grateful for a pathetic 250 one-time video credits. And when you try to use them, you're blocked by a subscription paywall. Seriously. You pay once to own something, then they ask for more before you can even touch the features they advertised.
"If plan names change, you’ll be mapped to the new plan." That’s the line they used. That’s the line AppSumo let them get away with. Instead of honoring it, they nuked the plan we paid for and replaced it with hot garbage. They pretend like nothing happened, like we imagined the promises.
I didn’t back this for unlimited static images. Nobody did. We backed it for the future of AI video storytelling. Instead, we funded a bait-and-switch campaign wrapped in polished UI and empty hype. This wasn’t a pivot. This was betrayal.
They got their launch money. Then they pulled the ladder up and started selling subscriptions. Classic grift. If they relaunch under a new name later, don’t fall for it. This is a textbook example of why trust in LTDs is dying.
