Solid TTS tech but some interface hurdles make use harder than it should
I've tested quite a few TTS tools over the years and I even own a couple; that said, I find the results provided by LOVO the best ones so far, at least so far as English voices are concerned.
The concept of 'voice envelopes' which apparently uses real human voices to teach AI to have a specific way of expression makes the different voices sound distinctly different from one another, which is something I haven't found in any other system that I've tried.
There's a couple of things that I don't like, and because the big one relates to the tech itself, I remove one taco from my rating. The problem I've discovered is that teaching pronunciation requires the user to select the voice skin first, and type the word(s) later. Which means that if I am working on some very specific material that requires a lot of teaching, all of my work typing the words will get wasted if I decide to go with a different voice for another reason.
Even if the tech has reasons to do teaching separately, there *should* be a simple way to export a word list from one voice envelope and import it into another, or merge the word lists of any two voice envelopes.
My other complaint is that the interface feels quite rushed and not well put together. This has effect over several parts of the dashboard, for example:
1. When I log in I am asked to choose between the 'web studio' app and the voice over API. Why can't I simply have both as links or buttons somewhere on the dashboard and be able to switch between them as I see fit?!
2. The voice skin selector is quite broken. A click on the 'Sort by' dropdown offers a single choice: Favorites, and the filter button can filter by language, character, etc. but *not* by favorites. My point being, the functionality is there for all of us to see and use, but the interface simply needs to be rethought, and then reworked from the ground up.
Still, I encourage users looking for TTS tech to go with LOVO. The tech is good, and ultimately that's what matters. I am sure that interface improvements will come with time.
