Q: Hi Thomas & team, Good to see you guys her at AppSumo!
:-)
- Already bought MediaPlace (MP) via Createstudio, but got a couple of Q's that perhaps also is of interest to my fellow SumoLings:
1. In the last news mail, you introduced š¤ Image Upscaling with A.I.
- Just op be clear (as am about to do 8-10 upscaling sports photos from app 20x30cm 200 dpi -> Poster size A0 (84x118cm, or even 1000x1500cm 300 dpi (print)...
- I was about to look around for the best app for doing this either an AI online, or buying the TopazLabs image desktop app... To cut down the time costly image - retouching...
- Are you saying, that you brilliant app can do an - as good - or close to ass good upscaling job? - I will have to do some color & surface + (out)line correction anyways, so it does not have to be 100% on par with TopazLabs or the top op clqss online AI.... - Could you add a few comments about the quality & scale engin in MediaPlace? (would you recommend using MP for such, or is it more for "smaller, less demanding jobs"?)
- How does MediaPlace work if I ex. have 2 iMacs 27" (Intell) that share same user profile: ie. same iCloud account (shows the same files on each's desktop (so actually shares same "Harddrive in iCloud" , but also do have each its own Harddrive. ( I ex. work on a file stored on the local HD, but move it to either iCloud - or to an local external SSD drive, when finished...
- Do you have recommendations for similar, or best practice setups, on ex 2 iMacs..
Kind regards
Henrik

May 14, 2024A: Hi Henrik, very good questions. First of all let me say that the UpScaling is still in Beta and a few Graphic Cards are not supported. In those cases it uses the CPU and it may be slow. But in 90% of cases it works very well. It scales up an image up to 4 times. But here we are talking about pixels, so if an image is 250x250, the end result would be a 1000x1000 image. The DPI is only used for printing purposes. So getting to your example, 20x30 cm is 7.87x11.81 inches. If you want to print at 200 DPI your image has to be 1574x2362. To print to 1000x1500cm 300 dpi the resolution for the image is (if my calculations are correct) 117,900 x 177,165 pixels, which is a huge image. Honestly I don't think I've even had an image so big here :) It's technically possible to reach that size with the UpScaling, maybe applying it 2/3 times on a regular size image. But the problem is the time that it'd take, it could be very slow and for sure you need a powerful Graphic Card.
About the shareability, you can use any external HD or cloud folder. The only requirement is to make the files available offline (so the "online-only" features should be turned off) and you should access from one computer at a time cause right now we don't handle concurrency.
Hi Thomas, (sorry - think I somehow did a double posting (also beneath your answer to another SumoLing)...
Wow ! So not only super valuable app (keeping me sane) , - also super good & fast reply - Love it :-)
- Last answer first - super cool, also being able to more or less integrate content on the external HD :-)
Yes, figured - upscaling, if possible to do such "XXXXXL", would "cost" CPU + time, fortunately for my use case its fortunately a one time of 8-10 images.. not an daily task :-[] :-)
So, glad to hear you unfolding "the how" a bit, :-) , making me think MediaPlace will become part of my workflow creating my Big-A** size poster images :-)
Perhaps the optimal solution would be to do a bit less upscaling, ex. "only" an 4X, and then transform it into a vector image, to keep the file manageable when printing, but also as the motive is a bit "oil-plastic-realisme-cartoon-style" ex. as used by Rockstar North (https://www.gtavice.net/content/images/official-grand-theft-auto-vi-trailer-1-artwork.jpg)
Thanks again
Big fan

I think it could work. Btw, I was curious and I applied a double 4x upscaling on your 1280x720 image, so the new one is 20480x11520. It took me a couple of minutes on my M3 Pro Mac but the result is pretty impressive. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8nwx3cwexwxw7jw/n-fuc7n8fi00_euk.png?dl=0 (it's a uncompressed PNG so it's about 350Mb)

Just a quickly: So So So - Stoked :-D - Super thanks!
- If I had not gotten MediaPlace already, this tiny corner of what it can do & your customer dedication, would make it a no-brainer.
And wow, the upscale you did, showed me that MedaiPlace does handle this perfectly, so crisp & clear, not 99.9% but 100% perfect !!
- even on my "intel iMac" if 5-10X slower than the cool M3, its a walk in the park :-)
Thanks again
Henrik
Very glad to hear that!! :)
