Good start
I had some time today to play around with the tool. I DO like the idea but I am not sure yet if and how much I will use it in its current state.
What I like:
– Preview of lottie files: This is really handy. Changing colors as well, I'd wish I could change stroke width as well (for icons)
– It's fast
– good UI
– creating image slideshows fast
– the browser is a great idea. I do own hoverify, but this is even more handy as it's directly connected to where I'd save the files to
– the overall concept and idea is a good one
What I wish/don't like:
– It's a closed system and everything needs to be copied into mediaplace. I understand that might be necessary for speed but it is a big issue when handling large files as the watch folders will duplicate all media resulting in a lot of wasted disk space. So it really isn't a place for ALL media, only for lightweight design assets maybe. This is most likely the biggest issue of all and might hold me back to use it. Maybe I'll use it just for icons and lotties for now but I think this really has to be solved in order to be used as a professional tool
– no pbs support (large photoshop files)
– "Open with" is not available when selecting multiple files, just "open with default app"
– Slideshow creation is buggy on my first try, images didn't show at first which somehow fixed itself quickly (can't reproduce it)
– generating patterns allows no custom shapes/svgs
– no CSV file support
– font support is rudimentary
– when finetunign AI background removal command + Z for undo doesn't work
– no sliders or handles for values when editing an image, only text input
– folder watch should really be folder sync: it should work both ways!
– gradient generator should have more colors for a mesh gradient and be able to export as CSS as well
– I wish I could preview PDF files, being able to browse though the pages without opening Acrobat
– being able to open multiple windows (!) is a must
– extensions for photoshop, illustrator etc would be nice in the long term
– support for 3d object preview would be really great (gtlf, obj), could be achieved by loading into a frame using threejs
my verdict:
This is not a place for all media (yet?), but it could be a great assets manager for designers. But it does have a long way to go and there are some major issues holding me back from using it. I'll keep it anyway and will check it out in a year or so. It does look promising and competing mostly with slow and bad apps like adobe bridge there definitely is a market for it.

May 9, 2024Hey Emjay, appreciate the lengthy and well thought out review! I'm glad you find MediaPlace useful and replaces some of those old clunky apps like Adobe bridge.
However you shouldn't need to wait a year to see the epicness that we have rolling out soon with much better editing features and canva like creation feature with templates, jam-packed with AI!
We will be addressing some of the minor things you mentioned here as well soon too, so we appreciate you letting us know! If you have any more feedback or feature requests be sure to drop them in the fb group (check your emails for access)
Thanks, Jordan
