Nice option to create dashboards of bookmarks for various contexts
minimarks is a neat tool. It provides you with a dashboard that let's you lay your bookmarks out in various layouts. I'm setting up different dashboards for various contexts in my life. This will help me stay focused on what I'm working on and will help me remember the various tools I might be forgetting to use.
For the above use cases, minimarks is great! I also love the ability to add RSS feeds into the interface.
However, as a full on bookmark manager, it's missing the mark in some areas. I have a lot of bookmarks that are not pages I'm going to frequent. They are one offs that I want for reference in the future on very rare occasions. minimarks is not the place for these. Since minimarks is a self-proclaimed "start page", I only want my frequently used bookmarks on my various context-based dashboards. The interface does not lend itself to "storing" those rarely accessed, but still necessary, one-off bookmarks. I'm knocking one taco off for this since now I need to consider using a second tool for these types of bookmarks.
Also, unlike some competitors, minimarks does not archive versions of bookmarks as PDFs, Web Archives, or screenshots. I'm not lowering my review due to this missing feature since I knew it didn't exist going into it, but I just wanted to point it out.
Finally, I'm knocking a second taco off for a technical issue that occurred today. The SSL certificate for minimarks.io, the web application URL, expired today. That's poor form for a web application and makes me think twice regarding the management of their product.
I will continue to use the product as a neat dashboard, but it has not become my full-fledged bookmark manager.
Update:
I'm changing my review rating to 5 tacos. Support responded to and resolved the problem with the SSL certificate very quickly. Can't ask for more than that. Turns out their SSL provider failed to renew their certificate. All good.
As for my issue regarding storing rarely accessed, but still necessary, one-off bookmarks, I brainstormed some ideas with Seb. He recommended I set up a space specifically for the purpose of storing these types of bookmarks. Great idea that I'm going to give it a shot.
