Q: ADVERTISING What are your policies about sponsored videos and adverts that we manually add within our actual videos.
We understand you haven't added the advert module, but are we allowed to monetize as we see fit?
e.g. If we got a video ad from a sponsor and spliced it manually into our content... Would this be okay? Or are you guys somehow censoring / guiding what is or isn't allowed in our content?

May 14, 2024A: Hello,
We don't have restrictions on you putting ads inside your own video content. We just don't provide an advertising monetization model or any advertising related features. The purpose of our platform is paid subscriptions and we just want to that be totally clear.
At least one of our existing publishers has a video series inside their channel that is "sponsored by Geico" or something like that. Totally fine by us.

Got me 2 codes, for 2 still to-be-carved-out projects.
Now going again to publicly ask this question, as personally mailing your team did not get me any reply so far (I assume you guys are very busy atm, so no worries, but apparently this question burns for a couple of Sumo-lings):
- Understood: you don't like advertising (me neither)
- so, absolutely not asking for an adserver or alike anyway, or any function to interrupt a video every X minutes or alike
- still asking to allow a pre-/post-roll video (eg size restricted, eg 20 seconds) to be put on the roadmap (as a serious item)
Why?
- Not only it allows a Publisher to build a revenue stream (granted, not benefitting Odeum directly as contracting & billing most likely happens outside of your platform), aka sponsorship or ads,
*but also*
- would enable to within the platform run promos for eg newly uploaded videos (basically a Trailer),
which both means a tighter relationship with content providers/ sponsors *and* subscribers, vor Odium meaning a more likely successful Channel, more likely attracting more recurring subscribers, meaning more $1's/ month.
Enabling sponsoring would simply allow the interested publisher to build funds for creating more content, again meaning exactly the as per above: more likely successful publishers with growing subscriber bases, more revenue or Odeum...
Or allowing for lower subscription fees for end users, or or or.
Yes, you could cut it into the actual video, but how 2000's is that? It's like "ha-ha, see, I sneaked in an ad anyway", and if a sponsor changes, you delete, cut a new one in, encode the whole thing once more, upload again...
It really feels Odeum artificially cripples a publishers business model for a not really obvious reason, this I do not understand and so far don't get answered. Look at the podcasting industry, a brief sponsored message works great if the content is good. Also, in eg B2B environments, or when you have someone helping production of content, this is just standard to do.
Looking forward to a real reply why that feature would anyhow have a bad influence on your solution?
If a publisher decides not to use it at all, fine. If using it to promote eg new content, fine, as engaging with subscribers. Using for a sponsor message, also fine, because... see above. I really don't get the stance against it without a useful "why".
Thanks for looking into this, still looking forward building sth interesting on Odeum!
Hey EvilT - Sorry if we missed this earlier.
So yes, totally understand your use case and don't disagree at all with the idea of this and I could see it being valuable for our publishers. I can tell you without hesitation that we will discuss it. Since many people are making a buying decision here on AppSumo I am just wanting to be really careful not to say that this will definitely get built. I just don't want anyone to buy a code based on this and be disappointed if we don't end up adding it. I do really like the idea, and I can't really imagine that we wouldn't build this eventually because I think it is becoming quite standard, even for cross promotion of other content on your own channel.

Hey again,
This answer really is a relief, as so far everything pointing into the direction what might sound like „ad“ was pushed away by your team.
I see overall the understanding of that feature vs ‚ad breaks‘ appears the same, good to hear!
