Q: Is the custom domain of the email addresses naked?
Or it has to be a subdomain?

You can use naked/apex domains but you must ensure that no other email service is currently attached to it via your DNS MX records. Please see the advanced section here: https://docs.paced.email/article/6-adding-a-custom-domain
