Paperguide has received positive feedback for its efficient AI tools, user-friendly interface, and helpful support team. It is particularly praised as a promising tool for academic research. While there are some limitations in natural language queries and file uploads, overall, Paperguide is a solid choice for those in need of a research assistant. Additionally, with a 60-day money-back guarantee, it's worth giving it a try.

Friendly team, but the tool feels half-baked

The support team at Paperguide is kind and quick to respond—definitely a plus. But the platform itself just doesn’t deliver yet. It only works for very simple, narrowly defined queries. Anything more layered or analytical ends up with unsatisfying or irrelevant results.
Natural language queries fall flat, and file uploads are heavily restricted, which really limits the usefulness for in-depth academic work. Even the filters for things like citation count or journal rankings don’t seem to improve the quality of the output in any transparent way.
The team says they’re working on a “deep research reports” feature, which sounds promising. Hopefully that update makes this more than just a fancy keyword search. For now, it’s not ready for serious research in humanities

Hi. Sorry we could not meet your expectations and thank you for your valuable feedback. As I mentioned, due to the inherent nature of building a research specific product built on top of generic LLMs, to avoid hallucinations and also to focus the response to avoid sources outside research realm, some calls have to be taken on the design and hence complete natural language interaction is not possible. It is a trade-off especially as the features are designed to focus on specific use cases. We take your feedback regarding the quality of response and the need for improving filters. Regarding the quality of responses, we definitely have scope for improvement and our team is working on it and Deep Research reports are going to be a significant jump with its option to build your query in multi-step process.

very dissapointed

I tried the same search in Paperguide (paid version) as in Elicit and Spacespace (free version), about an illness. While Paperguide gave me 0 results, the other two gave me complete research with dozens of papers. I did the same with the write mode. With Paperguide you get a paragraph, and all the amplification is the same idea over and over again. Nothing to do with the others. Any free AI system gives you much more information.

You can try by yourself: I asked about Lyme prevalence in different regions in Spain. It gave me 0 results

Hi. Thanks for your review and sorry that you faced any issue with our platform. Our team has checked the logs and due to an error in translation when the system was processing your query, the results were 0. You can please try now and see.
While there is scope for improvement in our search, I believe it is very unlikely that the response will be so bad unless the system or LLMs were down when you tried it.

Regarding our writer, you can refer to our demo video to see the modes in which you can use and the best ways to use it.

In certain situations when you use the same prompt of continue writing multiple times, there is a chance that the response would be repetitive as there is no additional context being provided in the prompt and it simply continues based on existing content and the prompt.

Amazing

The best news for myself: Paperguide does not revolutionize my text work, but it enriches and deepens it in every single step. My papers and books have always been a “chat” with (usually many) texts by others, at every stage of production: from research to writing to the “director's cut” of the final version.
So far, I've only been able to try out a few of the many features. But they have already convinced me and are more than worth the money alone.
For my part, I would like to see the research options extended beyond Semanticscholar to similarly powerful services in the field of social and cultural sciences. Perhaps the license-free service “BASE” (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine) could be integrated? https://www.base-search.net/about/en/index.php?
I am curious about the possibilities in Paperguide that I have not yet tried and all those that are to come.

Incredible Research Assistant — Already Impressive, and Getting Better Fast

I’m on Tier 2 and already getting a ton of value from Paperguide. I haven’t fully explored every feature yet, but what I’ve seen so far is solid, especially for research-heavy work, academic writing, or any content that needs credible sources.

What makes Paperguide stand out:
200M+ paper database + AI-powered answers with proper citations

Unlimited AI chat with PDFs and scientific articles, limited to 50 uses every three hours, which I think is totally reasonable

Reference manager with folders, tags, and citation exports

Built-in AI humanizer in the editor, very useful for making text sound more natural

Supports GPT-4, GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and more

20 full article generations/month at Tier 2, a solid upgrade over Tier 1

Onboarding and learning curve:
It took me a little time to figure out how to use Paperguide. The interface can feel a bit daunting at first, but even without scheduling the onboarding call (included from Tier 2 and up), I still managed to get the hang of it. I’ve been really busy and haven’t had as much time as I’d like to explore it ,and yet it still clicked. That says a lot about the usability once you dive in.

Also worth noting: their support team seems great, and the Discord group is active. If you need guidance, help is just a message away.

Coming soon:
What I’m especially excited about is the Deep Research Report feature launching soon. Tier 2 users will get 50 reports/month, and if it works as well as I hope, I may no longer need my other deep analysis tool.

The only thing I’d still love to see: transparency about which AI model is generating your results. That would really help with understanding output quality and consistency.

Final thoughts:
Paperguide already complements the other research tools I use, and with its current trajectory, it may end up replacing them. For a lifetime deal, this is outstanding value.

I’ve seen quite a few people on the AppSumo page saying they missed it the last time and were waiting for it to return. Well, it’s back now, and if you're doing serious research or writing, you should not miss it this time.

Hi Karmeshvar,

Thanks for your review. Really appreciate taking your time and sharing your review. We are working on Deep Research Reports and we are as excited to release it so that users like you can make the best use of it. Regarding onboarding, we will work on improving the user journey there. Regarding the model details, we will evaluate internally and decide whether to share them with users or not. As such very rarely, users have asked for it. You can rest assured that we have used models that are best for a specific feature based on their performance strength for the feature's use cases.
