šŸ’Ŗ A Solid Platform With Excellent Support

šŸ’Æ Pensil Is A Must Buy

šŸ’Ž I run a community for creative professionals. I needed a straightforward platform for my members to communicate information with each other during project collaboration, share community event schedules, and host educational materials. After 6 weeks of testing and production, Pensil fits the bill.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
šŸ† Pros:

āœļø Clean Interface - Simple design is easy for my users to navigate.

āœļø Fast and Responsive - I have over 100 active users and I have had zero complaints about speed or connectivity. GTMetrix rates my site A/96/88.

āœļø White Label - CNAME works perfectly with my subdomain. Emails come from my domain (there was an additional one-time fee for the email.)

āœļø Embedded Sections - This is a killer feature that allows for forms and other embeddable apps to be easily integrated within the site.

āœļø Support - Support from Pensil has been excellent. They have addressed every issue and request within 12 hours or less. Feature requests have been implemented in days, not weeks or months (or never) like some of the other SaaS tools Iā€™ve used.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
šŸ‘ļøā€šŸ—Øļø Things Iā€™d like to see:

Sub Sections for the Embeds and the Links

Newsletter/Group Email (Coming in June?)

Pabbly Integration

Direct Notion embeds

Less Confusing Registration Link
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

šŸ‘‰ BOTTOM LINE

šŸš— Iā€™m daily driving Pensil and my community is actively using it with no complaints. Pensil is a relatively new platform run by a small but enthusiastic team. It is not as feature-rich as BuddyPress or Circles - yet. There have been no speed or access issues and support has been excellent. I feel lucky to have gotten in on the ground floor of this solid product.

Disappointingly slow and laggy

Honestly fantastic features. Slick design. Clean UI. But SO SLOW. Can't barely load an image to a post without it loading and loading. I'm disappointed.

Huge potential but not ready for me to go live just yet

I really, really want to love Pensil but there are a lot of small, messy issues that need to be resolved before I could think about switching my community overā€”Iā€™m hopeful that itā€™ll get there.

Functionally it works okayā€”a little slow and a test livestream didnā€™t recordā€”but nothing thatā€™s a dealbreaker.

I never expect perfection from a new product on ASā€”especially so close to launchā€”but I do need to be relatively confident that I could start using it within 3-4 months, based on current functionality, developer responsiveness, and product potential/roadmap. Iā€™ll take the refund period to make that decision but given the issues are small Iā€™m quietly confident this will be a deal I keep.

A few things stopping me from switching my existing community to Pensil right now:

ā€¢ Not everything is mobile responsive. Even with an app available it needs to work in a mobile browser. Links inside of Events are an example.

ā€¢ Logo dimensions are not honored so it appears stretched or squished in various places. If thereā€™s a specific ratio required itā€™d be helpful to share the info as users choose their logo file.

ā€¢ The UX micro copy is strangely inconsistentā€”with some of it written all lowercase. There are grammatical errors too. This appears in the community itself and email notifications. Itā€™s very obvious the English was written by someone with ESL which would be a big problem for my brand. You canā€™t edit any of this textā€”if I could edit it myself it would be a non-issue.

ā€¢ You canā€™t edit the text in any of the notification emails that are sentā€”I couldnā€™t even find a resource that showed examples of them all. Itā€™s really important to know 100% of the messaging that my members/customers may see.

ā€¢ I appear to have been given a generic username that I canā€™t change: @ my name with a string of numbers. No idea why thatā€™s shown when hovering over my picture but not something I can edit.

ā€¢ You can create an Event or schedule a Live but theyā€™re not integrated. So you canā€™t schedule a Live and include it in the Events sectionā€”making it more difficult for members to track. Vice versa your Events are assumed to be meetings where everyone is an active contributor. This set up doesnā€™t work great for larger communities where content/teaching is live-streamed.

ā€¢ Both Live and Events post a notification post immediately to the community, I couldnā€™t see a way to create them privately and then announce the Event when youā€™re ready.

Most of these issues are small but they quickly stack into a messy experienceā€”in a community the UX is as important as function.

If you donā€™t need finesse then Pensil works fineā€”if your brand is a concern and you plan to use it for a paid membership, then they need some time to clean up the experience but hopefully it wonā€™t take long.

Keeping this one in my back pocket for now and if they can resolve some of the issues Iā€™ll likely upgrade.
