Very good indeed - more quality speakers needed
Like another reviewer, I purchased both Lovo and Play.ht. I have a blog with stories on events worldwide.
Here's the short version.
- Both have great voices. Lovo has some better ones, like a south African gentleman, whose pronunciation and gravitas is amazing. Unfortunately, the quality of the audio is low.
- Lovo has a terrible way to correct pronunciation and it doesn't work for me. Play.ht is far superior.
- Play.ht has a WordPress plugin that is very good, and pulls in all the text into a single document, which is absolutely essential. Lovo breaks the text into sections - when I have words with accents - like Mondelēz, it splits the word into two sections and it's hard to join them together. Making working on the file impossible.
- Lovo has a better way to search and find voices and I like that I can save several favourites, which allows me to easily compare on multiple documents how each sounds with the pronunciation.
- Even though Lovo had some better voices, Play.ht has some very good (and some bad) ones.
- Some of the more realistic voices in Lovo, however, failed to pronounce foreign words correctly. I would use countries like Côte d'Ivoire (pronounced 'coat divoir') as a test. The voices on Play.ht got it right more often than Lovo.
- The custom pause parameters in Play.ht are better than Lovo
- Lovo has bg music, but you can't upload your own, so that's useless. With Play.ht I download the file and import it into Hindenburg podcast editor, then apply auto-ducking with a sound file below and get a professional output in seconds.
In summary, I'll keep both, because this is such an important area for me - but I see myself using Play.ht much more. I just hope they continue to improve the realism of the voices with quality, and breaths on pause, etc.
Definitely a five-star product though.
