The product seemed good, and they promised a lot. They had a Discord group and were fairly active so I thought it was a winner. They had issues with reliability and then there were rumours of financial issues. Appsumo to their credit alerted users to the issue and offered a limited time refund - only 50% for me unfortunately as I was not a plus member but 50% is better than 0%. Now I see they very sneakily announced a degraded product for the lifetime customers right at the end of the Appsumno refund notice. I would never trust these guys again. This and a few other recent deals have made me more wary of purchasing LTDs/
They sold us a deal. Tried to upsell us. Tried to get rid of us. Tried to convert us to subscribers. Denied anything was going on after publicly posting about financial troubles. For once appsumo was on our side against a shady founder. Unreal. Only options in the end were only offered by retable at the last day of refund window. Either refund or be on an old server and be throttled with no support or updates or become a subscriber. Unreal. Could have been great but found der is scummy and anyone who buys from this guy will find out. Sad sad sad. Just glad appsumo had our backs for once.
I purchased Retable LTD in a condition which was not complete in the hopes that the future updates would make this compete with the market leaders.
The latest email states 100% uptime is on their roadmap, well is this icluded for legacy users as there have been numerous occasions where the service is unreachable which is appaling for a critical service. There were not notifications and support just ignored my emails whilst their service was unusable.
The biggest stinger here is the no future updates for legacy users which is clearly included in the deal upon purchase.
There is 0% chance of us further investing further now.
I'm also going to be much more careful when purchasing anything through AppSumo from now on.
LTD Breakdown Shows Disappointing Lack of Planning
One of the key features of the Appsumo offering was "All future Team Plan updates".
Yet according to Retable's latest email, anyone who purchased the LTD would be migrated to a separate server and be able to operate essentially as the platform exists today. To access any future product developments, users will have to subscribe separately. Developments I've been waiting for for a year that would make Retable competitive with AirTable (two-way linking across tables). Without this, the product is useless to me.
The value proposition to a company for using AppSumo is simple: Grow your user base (with preferential terms) while getting a small infusion of cash (for the value provided). These LTD users are then evangelists who can generate new cashflow on the full-rate plans you offer.
Yet, for too many companies (Retable included), it seems to be "a small infusion of cash now, and we'll screw those early adopters over when it becomes painfully obvious that we gave away the farm." It's not hard to calculate the ongoing costs of providing a deal on AppSumo over time. And it's not hard to determine what your existing cost-per-acquisition and monthly/annual recurring revenue per user are. Long-term feasibility can be estimated, and the AppSumo offering made to support that as an advertising cost.
These repeated deal failures can reflect badly on AppSumo, absolutely, however they mostly reflect the disappointing lack of foresight on the part of the product team, including their inability to project (with any reasonable degree of accuracy) the drain an LTD will place on their finances. AppSumo allows sellers to limit codes, if this is a volume problem that can be addressed.
I am very disappointed in the team behind Retable (and other failed products) for their almost complete lack of foresight and disappointed to lose yet another tool on AppSumo.
No communications about shutting down or moving to "legacy"
This is the third product within a short time that is changing their lifetime deal to something else. In the past, I have bought a lot of deals, as you can see. Now I have more Appsumo credits than I know what to do with.
Retable was okay, a bit complicated to use, but I have had several deals that turned out to be better later, with a bit of development.
However, here's financial trouble.
Appsumo states that Retable announced shutting down in November - but I haven't received an email about that. Instead today, I am asked to change to a paid plan or stay on my "legacy" plan without updates. Long after their Black Friday deal.
Firstly, an early adopter that is left out in the cold unless they pay more is not going to invest again. Secondly, the only reason I saw Appsumo's message above to refund until [in TWO DAYS TIME] was the email that I just got, with !URGENT! in the message.
So now I guess I will check all the Appsumo deal pages of what I have purchased just to make sure I get a refund in time, because this seems to be happening a lot lately.
I am sorely disappointed and will be refunding. At least there's that. More credits for me.
