Q: Hi there!

This deal looks great. I have a question regarding the use of CDN and how it affects the credit count.

The Image Optimizer and Adaptive Images service both store optimized images on your CDN. These images are stored for 30 days and during this period, they are served an unlimited time to visitors that have the same viewports. After 30 days, the images are deleted from your CDN's cache. So, the next time a user requests this file, it will have to be optimized all over again, using credits again.

If I configure the two plugins to store optimized images on my CDN, am I right in thinking that the file won't be deleted after 30 days? Would that mean that this image would not need to be optimized again after those 30 days, for visitors that have the same viewport, meaning that I would be able to serve it again and again to those visitors without using additional credits? I would only need to use credits again next time that image needs to be optimized differently (new viewport or image size needed)?

Hope my question is clear :)

A: Hello Jean-Michel! :-)

Allow me to clarify some of your questions:
1) only ShortPixel Adaptive Images (SPAI) keeps the images on a CDN
Other than that the 30 days-explanation is correct

2) correct! In theory, if you configure your CDN to keep the images for -say- 365 days then they will be directly served from your CDN and thus no new credits will be used after 30 days.
But keep in mind that usually CDNs have rules that may remove the assets sooner and also a CDN has multiple PoPs in different locations.
And if the image X was cached in London but not in Sao Paulo, when one request comes from Brazil then the server in Brazil will ask for the image at the origin (aka ShortPixel) and this can trigger a new optimization if the 30 days have passed.

I realize this can be complicated taking into account all the details, I hope I was able to make it a bit clearer 🙃

Hé! Thanks for the super fast reply!

I thought that if my hosting plan CDN has many locations around the world the image would be cached everywhere for fast delivery... However, if that's not the case, as all my clients (thus most of my visitors) are based in my Quebec, Canada, in a radius of about 1500Km from a CDN server location, I guess they should all be served via the same CDN. Thus only visitors from further away would trigger a new conversion process, which shouldn't be that often. Looks pretty convenient for me!

Oh! Also, is it possible to serve Glossy compression when client's are consulting their photo gallery, and then to somehow serve them the full-size original photograph when they want to download it?

Thanks!

You're very welcome! :-)

1) you're right in your assumption with the visitors in Quebec.
2) as for the Glossy question: there may be a way to do this I believe with some exclusions. Please contact my colleagues and they may be able to assist you:
