Q: Currently I use Hubdoc, a Xero owned app and comes free with Xero.
How is SparkReceipts different / better? We are not having any troubles with Hubdoc but would like more features / functionality. Would like a dashboard where we can manage all clients who use SparkReceipts.

May 14, 2024A: Hi,
Thanks for the question. I only have surface-level knowledge of Hubdoc, so pardon me for any mistakes or misunderstandings. But technically, it is very similar to e.g. Sage Autoentry or other such simple data entry apps acquired by larger accounting companies to complement their portfolio.
If it works well for your use case, then that's of course great :) And it has lots of integrations that SparkReceipt does not yet have, but all of this is a matter of time until I am able to catch up.
Here is why I think Hubdoc would not be for me:
- Scanning a receipt takes what seems like a million years. SparkReceipt aims to return scan results in around 5-10 seconds, which you can instantly verify and move on.
- No concept of tracking income.
- Limited international use: No multi-currency conversion functionalities. Very limited date formatting etc options for international businesses.
- No ability to separate e.g. business or personal expenses, or expenses between multiple businesses within the same login session.
- The mobile app is unusable (average rating of 1.9 stars in Google Play), and has virtually no functionality besides scanning. SparkReceipt aims for feature parity between the mobile and web applications.
- Good integrations but no custom automation support implemented, or on the roadmap.
- Overall it seems is that the app has been quite stagnant since 2019.
Mostly these things come down to philosophy. As a daily user of SparkReceipt myself, I am very sensitive to problems that hinder the usability or user experience of the app. The top things for me almost no comparable apps have right are:
1. Scanning speed. I want to get the expense done now and not tomorrow.
2. Seamless multi-currency use.
3. Both a good mobile and a web app.
4. Income and document management functions.
That's my take on why SparkReceipt is better for me, but while I concentrated on the negative, of course Hubdoc has a lot of users and I think it suits many small businesses needs too.
Best regards,
Antti
You are right about Hubdoc. But it suits my needs at the moment as I don't require multi currency etc. There is no support since the acquisition by Xero. That is the reason I would like to try SparkReceipt. If SparkReceipt can provide good support and can do what Hubdoc does (scanning and categorising expenses) it is more than enough at this price. Keep up the good work!
