Display limitations
I rushed into buying tier 1 on the last day before the most recent price increase but not redeemed it yet, just playing around with the free version for now.
I am limiting my initial review to the UI/display settings as for me this is the most important part.
I am comparing it with Start.me which I also bought the Pro version of. There are some features I like about tabExtend that seem to be missing in Start.me, however what I really don't like in tabExtend are what appears to be the very limited display options of the groups and the contents inside of each group, as well as the group containers inside each category!
Even in compact view in each group, to me there is still too much white space vertically, seriously limiting the number of bookmarks, notes etc one can see without having to use a vertical scrollbar that appears on the right of each group containing more than 13 bookmarks (on my 15.6" laptop screen).
This limited space issue is exacerbated by the fact that group containers seem to be all equal in height and once the screen is filled with groups, all next to each other, additional groups still get added only horizontally, rather than down vertically!
It is a complete nuisance to me having to point my mouse at the thin scrollbar that appears at the bottom and drag it to the left in order to actually see any additional groups created!
I understand that in tabExtend you can resize (only horizontally) and minimize each group container, but both options are not helping if you want to see as many bookmarks on the screen as possible to get an overview.
This is so much better implemented in Start.me where they use widgets that only expand in height depending on the amount of content you add to each and where you can define the layout of the page (the equivalent of a workspace in tabExtend), i.e. the number of columns on display, and there are also four different display settings for the bookmarks inside each widget, e.g. having an effect on how compressed they appear.
I wish tabExtend implemented a better UI that allows for many more different display settings at all levels, a similar 'birds eye' view on bookmarks/tabs as in Start.me,
Yes, some would argue you can just add another category with new groups if you want to see more of your bookmarks/tabs and other content on the visible part of your screen without having to scroll sideways or up/down inside of each group that are all the same height, but for me 4 group colums containing 13 bookmarks each (already in compressed display setting!), giving me only just over 50 bookmarks to be visible at any time without scrolling sideways or individually inside each group/column/widget (whatever you want to call it), is probably not enough for me as a visual type person who likes the birdseye view on things.
I really hope tabExtend will be vastly improving their UI and the display settings available, as I really like all the other functionalities it offers so far.
