TabsFolders

Product details

Q: Hey Chris, Thanks for bringing this product to us.

I guess you could say I am a heavy browser user, it's quite common for me to have up to 150 tabs open since I use the "start where you left of" option.
I definitely have a need for tab management there are tons of choices in this space to help, and many free that I have tried like Papillion, One tab, the great suspender, email this page, workona, history search etc. but as yet I have not found a perfect solution - at volume category management is really necessary.
It feels like so far your product development is focused on the fluff like sharing our book marks, cross browser sharing, open all the bookmarks in a folder etc. I'm not saying that they aren't useful for some people sometimes but they are secondary requirements.
IMHO - the core requirements for this space is:
1. robustness of storage - those bookmarks represent thousands of hours of work, many tools can lose them, a back up and restore (export/import) feature is essential and it needs to be rock solid - does Tabs folder have these features?

2. Practical onboarding and import - if a user has thousands of bookmarks in say chrome, with a folder structure will Tabsfolder import everything from chrome including the existing folder structure.

3. Bookmark Categorisation Options - I need a practical fast workflow for saving and categorising in multiple categories - when saving bookmarks I am doing so for future reference, very often the bookmark will be relevant to multiple topics/tasks/folders, I need a tool to save that bookmark in all folders categories in one fast action, it's very old fashioned and limiting to only be able to save a bookmark in one place, and repeatedly saving it in multiple folders one at a time is a waste of time - ideally it should work like gmail labels (basically like tags) or even better, does it?

4. Bookmarking Workflow - If I understand correctly, at the moment to categorise a bookmark in Tabsfolders you need to do so in two steps: First save it into a general bookmarks folder, then secondly go into the app and file it in a folder? (and you can only save it in one folder as mentioned above?). That seems far too time consuming, please can you confirm if that's how it works.

5. The deal structure is based on the number of bookmarks does the same url in five folders count as one bookmark or five?

5. Retrieval - it would be nice if when reviewing folders for useful tabs we had options for the view displayed (perhaps even like windows file explorer "view" options), naked urls are not always as helpful as I would like, typing descriptions or notes is ok but time consuming - but thumbnails or even thumbnails with the first x(configurable in settings) characters would be my ideal (although I recognise that will have storage and bandwidth implications), what are the options for the "view" on retrieval in Tabsfolders?

Thanks

A: Hi Sumo-ling

Sorry for the delay in getting back to your questions. We really appreciate your in-depth comments, there's a lot to unpack so apologies if I miss something.

1. Yes we have in place cloud storage so all your tabs will be secured off device.

2. By default when TabsFolders imports bookmarks from Chrome it keeps the folder structure.

3. This is something currently missing but have heard since the deal went live. It's on our backlog and we'll get to it as soon as possible.

4. Yes that's the workflow at the moment, as mentioned in point 3, something we'll be correcting in the next update.

5. Those would be counted as 1 bookmark and not 5.

6. This has come up also. At the moment the folder name is the only area where you have space to leave short comments. But we'll be looking into notes functionality as a priority too.

Let me know if I answered everything, would love to hear your thoughts after using the product.

Thanks!

Hey Sumo-ling,

Kamil here Co-founder of TF and I wanted to jump in and add to Chris' reply,

To answer you:
1)The AppSumo plan includes a 10 day backup schedule for your bookmarks but in case you prefer to be doubly secure there is a bookmark export feature, which exports all your bookmarks into JSON format.

2)Yes the whole folder structure from chrome is imported into TabsFolders.

3)We will add this to the roadmap as either labels, tags or folder links. Depending on user voting.

4)There are two methods to save a bookmark / group of bookmarks.
a)Save button/hotkey fast but goes to default folder.
b)Hotkey to TabsFolders and drag and drop to any folder in your collection.
c)We are definitely open to more efficient / better ways of doing this.

5)The same URL counts as one bookmark.

6)We will add this to the roadmap for voting as we definitely plan to add more views / ways to view data in TabsFolders to help you work more effectively. On the data front we will look at options (server storage vs. local storage) and come up with the most workable implementation.

To make (4) easier, would you consider just auto saving (and auto-deleting on close) all open tabs from the current session?

i.e. I open a new tab and silently, in the background, it is added to TabsFolders in some kind of "session" folder. If I then want to continue my session from another device I just press a button and *boom* all tabs from the previous session are now in front of me.

If I want to "manage" any of them then I can drag and drop them out of the session folder and do what I want with them. They're now not auto-deleted when I close the "live" tab and everything is sweet :-)

That way I can use TabsFolders without ever having to bookmark anything. But I still have access to the more powerful features when I need them.

This is a reply to h4ppy's comment "To make (4) easier..." Yes we already access the "current session" in the folder current session; so we can add a feature to synchronize this folder between browsers when you click a button for example. Adding this to the feature roadmap.
