Getting addicted to Taskade
I've been following Taskade for years, as a note-taking enthusiast and now hardcore into PKM/BASB.
I first dismissed it as a cluttered, unfocused product. There's that jumbo call button.
Worst, the project navigation used to always be present, even inside a doc, giving you a sense of pressure to orchestrate between projects, not focusing on one document at a time.
They've fixed this problem with a more immersed document editor. Take note! It's better to describe a Taskade as a Doc (think like Google Doc) than a "Project".
Sometimes, you fire up the app for a private journaling session, group brainstorming, or 3-month team collaboration.
It's a way of thinking.
These super docs allow you to flexibly outline ideas. Unlike WorkFlowy or Notion, there's no pressure to fit a doc into the larger heirarchy. A doc isn't married to a folder or a Workspace either. It's so technically robust & sound that you can fundamentally move things around without anything breaking.
I can fill the strong level of care and operational superiority that powers the app. This Y Combinator, funded, small team is moving mountains to keep pushing updates and maintain a bug-free experience across all platforms.
The main downside is the UI.
While they've drastically upgraded the doc editor UX (used to be cluttered with Workspace navigation), it's still the app's weakness. The speed, cross-platform completeness, and feature-richness is held back by a user interface that lacks prioritization or hierarchy.
For example, it's insane how you can edit the emojis and tags in the Project list. That's technically difficult to implement, but it also ends up to be a cluttered experience, making it harder to tap a project on mobile. Same goes for seeing the "+ New Workspace" button, too prominent for something I won't touch every day.
Back to Taskade as Super Docs, the editor UX could use User Interface cleanup. Once you get a hang of this way of life, one would fire up a couple Taskade Docs every day.
For most of those docs, it'll be a temporary and private brainstorming experience. In such cases, I don't want page sharing, user Assignment, or phone calls shouting at me. Feels like I'm not welcome to drop unpolished ideas because it's a place for sharing with others in a full-on project management manner.
Would be cool to have those features turned off by default, with the ability to make them appear whenever the Super Doc is for a team project collaboration space.
Overall, this deal gets 7 Tacos. The app is already great as it is (technically superior and operationally reliable), with strange UI shortcomings holding it back. If they keep up the development, this is on the way to becoming a 10-taco deal.
