Don't Shoot The Troop Messenger
I'll be blunt. I skipped on the Chanty deal simply due to the restrictions of the deal.
The product itself was great. The UI was clean and modern, the UX was pretty much top-notch. It had quite a number of integrations. Overall, it was a great product. But...it's 2020. And it's the time of COVID. Not having group video calls was a deal breaker for me, and the fact that screen sharing was a BETA feature and only available starting at 3 codes, another deal breaker.
So here we are, not but a week later and we have Troop Messenger.
Some stark differences upfront between these two.
The UI: It's not as fun or vibrant as Chanty. It gets the job done, but it's not very enjoyable. There are some modern stylistic touches missing that would make it more fun and engaging to use, especially if you're going to be using this all day long to keep in touch with your team.
The UX: The UX is actually pretty decent. It's easy to navigate around and find what you're looking for. Chanty was pretty easy as well, but some things felt...off about it with more use.
The Troop Messenger app could use some TLC in this department...
Integrations: There are some present in Troop Messenger, such as GDrive and Dropbox, but not enough to really sate my appetite. I believe I saw that Webhooks are coming in the future, Q1 of '21. I hope that there is POST/GET support for that. Slack is the king of integrating with everything under the sun - would like to see Troop Messeger begin inching its way in that direction.
Some things I do really enjoy:
Cattle Call (I love the name haha) works well. I was able to have a call...with myself (you just have to say you're fine, and you're not really fine) and it worked really well. Video was crisp and clear, especially using my phone camera and not my crappy work laptop webcam. There was no stuttering, tearing, and zero lag.
I like things like Forkout, the various filters to find what you're looking for, and the plethora of "Controls" under the Admin settings. You have precise control over the entire platform's permissions. Some of the best I have seen from any tool.
Live tracking is an interesting feature.
Burnout chats
Some areas of improvement:
-The UI, already mentioned that.
-GIF support because that is literally a day saver some times. When you're having a bad day and you and the team can spam funny memes and GIFs, it can be the difference between wrapping up with a migraine and searching Google for the nearest overpass to jump off of, or a smile and loving life.
-While I do largely love the quality of Cattle Call, I think there is a need for some additional features, like the ability to toggle joinging with the camera on by default, being able to mute participants, and eventually background support. I use VCam, so it's not an issue for me personally, but it would be nice for others.
Hit my character limit, to be continued...
