A brilliant product for lovers of Google

Grabbed this on Sumo Day and have been using it with my team for the last few weeks so I thought I’d put together a quick pros and cons review!

PROS

Google Compatability – I run my life and my business with the Google Workspace suite of tools, and this has added some really cool functionality to the docs I use every day. I just had to import my Google Drive docs and I was ready to go.

Easier writing – Probably my favourite feature of Typed is the resource library and the split screen viewer. When I’m writing something, I usually work with 100 Chrome tabs open, copying and pasting various bits and bobs into one finished document. With Typed, I can add everything to the 'Resource Library' that comes with every doc, click on a resource to view it, then close it once I'm done pulling the relevant info. My computer's RAM has been very happy with the fewer tabs :)

File storage – There's a cool 'Knowledge Network' feature that shows a mindmap of all the files in a Typed space. I've found it really useful for finding stuff more quickly by browsing files visually, and also for understanding the relationship between my team's files.

Collaboration – Typed adds some of the functionality of a project management tool like Asana or Miro directly into documents which we've been experimenting with as a team. It's like a slightly more sophisticated version of Google's task management system but available across all files.

Also, when I share a document with my team, it shares everything in the Resource Library as well. This has helped us massively when it comes to research-heavy content as members of my team can share every bit of information that's gone into a piece they've created rather than just a Google Doc or Google Sheet with the finished product and a bunch of hyperlinks.

CONS

Website – Initially, the typed.do website didn’t load for me as I was trying to access it on Safari. Quick chat with Typed’s CX team and I managed to get in on Chrome – apparently it’s a website issue they are aware of and working on fixing ASAP but it freaked me out a bit!

Google focus – You have to have a Google email to sign up. This isn’t a downside for me as my whole life runs on the Google Workspace, but I imagine it’d be a bit of a deal breaker for anyone using Office 365. I think I saw in their roadmap that they are planning on adding a full integration with Microsoft further down the line, but right now it’s definitely only worth it for Google users.

Beta – A few of the more interesting features are in Beta and do feel like they need a bit more TLC. There's a tool that recommends documents and resources based on past content creation, for example, and it's a touch inaccurate.

Overall, I'm really happy with it and would very much recommend it. Super excited to see what the product is like in a year once they've ironed out some of the kinks!
