Q: Hi Can you explain in more details, and in "newbie language", how the usage of UTM.

io will "subtract" from the "pool" of features available in a 1 coupon-deal?

For example:

The AppSumo Plan gives 100 UTM Templates. As I have read elsewhere, there are 5 variants of URL parameters to track: source, medium, campaign, term and content.
Will 1 URL parameter take up 1 UTM Template each? Or how is Templates used? And why is the term a "Template"? Is suggest something to be altered.

The AppSumo Plan gives 10 custom domains per code.
Can the 100 Templates be distributed freely between the 10 domains? And can we exchange custom domains along the way?

I read somewhere in the thread, that the term "Project" is to be seen as a Folder. Is this purely an administration feature, or does it restrict on how we can use Templates and so on?

I am just trying to figure out, how the deal is put together regarding a daily usage, and how many codes are needed. Thanks in advance for clarification :-)

A: Hey,

Thanks for reaching out. This is Dan McGaw, founder, and CEO of UTM.io.

We look forward to helping you!

When creating a link and adding UTMs to it, that is just creating a link and is not considered a template. The Templates are something you predefine and setup to be used over and over again. You can see more details about them here :)
https://help.utm.io/article/48-what-is-the-value-of-creating-a-template

A URL parameter is not considered a template as that would be considered a link. If you save the URL parameter in a template, well it is a template and that will count against your template limit.

The templates can be freely used across all the projects, and the domains can be used across all the projects as well. Right now domains are not assigned to a template, so they work independently.

And Projects are in essence folders of data. Your links and templates live inside a project. So, a template will not be in more than one project unless you recreate it in multiple projects.

The demo we did yesterday with AppSumo was super helpful for getting spun up on the things, have you had a chance to check it out?

Thanks for answering. I will try to watch the video, you mention, but I have not had the time yet. Therefore one more question here.

You wrote: "When creating a link and adding UTMs to it, that is just creating a link ... and ... your links and templates live inside a project."

Does this mean, that we can create individual links to track BESIDE the links used inside the Templates"? If yes, are there any limitation to the no. of links created this way?

I ask this way, because I expect to be using UTM.io on my own, so team members and client accounts are irrelevant for now.

If yes to the above: The parameters that will count against the limits of a 1-coupon account would be the no. of domains used (10), no. of Projects used (10) and no. of Templates used (100). And beside that, I can create links (unlimited) manually?

If yes, that would be great :-)

Thanks for reading my reply and taking the time to get more clarification!

This is Dan Again :)

Right now templates are thier own object and do not allow you to set the URL in the template (this may change).

If you save a template, then it counts towards your template limit. Templates in most cases only include the UTM variables and the note that may go with it.

I would reocmmend just signing up for a free acocunt and testing it out :)

If you love it, then buy the deal. If you hate it, tell me so I can fix it.

The limits are as you said though, 10 projects, 10 custom domains and 100 templates :)

Let me know how else I can help.

Hey again
I just missed one thing from your answer :-)

I asked, if we can create our own links to track BESIDE the links used in the Templates"? If yes, are there any limitations to the no. of links created this way? (Or clicks or anything).

I could try a free account, as you say, but I haven't had the time, and I need to get the answers, because of the deadline for this deal.

Thanks in advance

Hello Dan.
Thank you very much for your explanation.

At first, I want to say that I already bought a deal :-)

Can you probably integrate some counter for a dashboard (probably separately in projects and templates)? This will avoid worrying about the number of remaining projects and templates.

For the moment we have 10 projects per code, 100 templates per code, and 10 custom domain shorteners per code.
Do I understand correctly, that:

1. Each of domain-names.xx will be counted as a custom domain. But it doesn't work for subdomains. I mean subdomain1.domain-name.xx
subdomain2.domain-name.xx
subdomain3.domain-name.xx
Is it true or I am wrong? For example, I am an app developer and I have created some apps for education sector. My apps are different, but they are using the same learning methodology. That's why we are using subdomains for each of our apps. Can I have 10 custom domains with "unlimited" (of course it's limited by reasonable number) subdomains for each of domains? Or each subdomain will be counted as a project?

2. I have understood that we can create an unlimited numbers of links. But if we start to using a template, it will be "cost". My question is if I have two links in two different projects, but I am using for both of them the same template. Will it be count as 1 or 2? The same question for the situation when we have a lot of links in the same project by using same template for each of links.

3. If we are logged in, we already have two predefined templates for Facebook and twitter. Does it mean, that I can create just 98 templates or I can create 100 and predefined templates just a welcome gift? :-)

4. Can you probably create and integrate more predefined templates that customers can quickly customize for their goals?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Thanks for following up.

Links are not a part of the template :)

You can make as many links as you would like.

Thanks for the questions.

We are in the process of designing a tracker page so you can see how many templates, projects and links you have in your account. Should be out in the coming months.

To make sure I answer all of your questions, I will post the question an then add the answer to it.

--> Great question. Thanks for giving me the example as well. A sub-domain would count as a domain. To help it make more sense, you are allowed to use 10 custom shorteners per code in essence.

--> Using a template on a link does not make that link count against your template quota. A saved template is the only thing that would count towards your template quota, and links are not part of templates at this time.

3. If we are logged in, we already have two predefined templates for Facebook and twitter. Does it mean, that I can create just 98 templates or I can create 100 and predefined templates just a welcome gift? :-)
--> Those templates do no count towards your template quota.

4. Can you probably create and integrate more predefined templates that customers can quickly customize for their goals?
--> Thanks for this idea. We are looking at some standardization of templates and link creation in general. We however do not want to force to much on folks as every company is different and uses different codes.
