Sarta you’re right to call this out, and thank you for linking to the original post from 2021.

Back in our FIRST AppSumo campaign, I did state that Tier 3 would include CNAME + white-labeling. That was my intent at the time, and I want to be clear: this wasn’t a bait-and-switch or something we quietly walked away from.

What happened in practice is this:

Over the last four years, VisualSitemaps evolved far beyond what it was in 2021.
We shipped a *large* number of high-impact features for AppSumo users — including AI architecture optimization, and most notably VisualFlows, which alone took nearly a year of R&D and went well over budget. ( https://visualsitemaps.com/blog/building-visualflows/ )

As we moved through those releases, two things became clear about CNAME support:

1. It turned out to be significantly more complex and costly than originally estimated given our infrastructure (visual crawling, rendering, storage, security, and scale).

2. By the time higher-impact roadmap items were completed, the original AppSumo budget had effectively been consumed.

At that point, we had to make a hard call:
1: either stop shipping major value to all users
or 2: continue investing in features that benefitted the entire AppSumo base, even if that meant some lower-priority promises didn’t land on the original timeline.

That’s on me to own.

What is also true and important context .. is that AppSumo users have received YEARS of ongoing development, live chat support, and new capabilities well beyond the original product, all funded from that same initial investment.

Today, CNAME is still something we’re evaluating, but given its production and operational costs and complexity, it can’t realistically be bundled “for free” into legacy tiers. If we do ship it, it would need to be offered as an optional paid add-on so it’s sustainable long-term.

I understand why this is frustrating, and I appreciate you holding us accountable. My commitment is to be transparent about tradeoffs, honest about feasibility, and to keep building a product that continues to deliver real value — which is exactly what we’ve been doing for the last four years.
