A Promising Start with Room for Growth

Having spent five years exclusively using Webflow for all client projects at my design agency, I've become well-versed in its capabilities and limitations, especially regarding CMS functionality and dynamic content. My search for a more adaptable tool led me to discover Web Studio, which caught my attention with its innovative feature of seamless external database integration, eliminating the need for Javascript, Zapier, or other workaround solutions. This unique capability was the deciding factor for me to invest in their premium offering, hopeful to contribute to what could be a transformative era in web design tools.

Pros:

Seamless External Database Integration: Web Studio uniquely offers the ability to directly connect with external databases, such as Supabase, simplifying what has traditionally been a complex process. This is particularly beneficial for projects requiring intensive data handling, providing an unmatched level of efficiency and simplicity compared to other platforms.

Cons:

Need for Feature Enhancement: The groundbreaking feature of connecting to external databases, while impressive, is limited by the platform's current inability to fully utilize the imported data. The lack of advanced data manipulation and display features is a notable drawback for executing more sophisticated projects.

Design and Usability Hurdles: Despite its potential, Web Studio's design interface is less intuitive than expected, particularly when creating responsive navigation. The available layout options are rudimentary, making the design process feel somewhat clunky compared to more established platforms.

Insufficient Educational Support: One of Web Studio's most surprising shortcomings is the absence of detailed tutorials or documentation to assist newcomers in building a basic website. Although there is a clear enthusiasm for the platform's future among online reviewers, actual use cases and practical guidance are noticeably lacking, which could impede new users from fully exploiting the platform's features.

AI Functionality Issues: The AI features within Web Studio are inconsistent, with performance varying from occasionally useful to often producing undesirable results. This inconsistency makes it more efficient at times to manually tackle design tasks rather than relying on the AI, highlighting a need for significant improvement in this area.

Looking Ahead:

The promise of future updates, such as the ability to import projects from Webflow or potentially Figma, gives me enough reason to remain with the platform for now. I plan to provide updates on my review as the platform evolves and these new features are implemented as well if I find the appropriate resources to build a complex dynamic website.

Hey Pixel, thank you for taking the time to write up such a comprehensive review. Me and the team agree with most of your points here and have taken notes.

As you pointed out, a lot of the shortcomings here will be addressed in upcoming updates, we're still very early in our journey and are a small team.

Covering some of the points above:

- Design and Usability Hurdles: Especially for responsive navigation. I'm taking this point in particular back to the team to discuss how this can be improved. Our approach on this so far is "give people all the parts to build what they need" rather than "give people exactly what they want out of the box". Menus in particular can quickly get complex when building it piece by piece. Ideally we get to a point where you configure your menu once for desktop and mobile, adapts out of the box between hamburger/list menu and then you're just left off with making some style edits. But yeah, some stuff for us to think about here.

- Insufficient Educational Support: I don't have much to add here other than work in progress. Just like our platform, our docs are open to anyone to submit changes or add new documentation. We're also continuously updating this and releasing new guides as we go, the biggest limitation here on our end is simply bandwidth.

- AI Functionality Issues: This is definitely an area we will be focusing on in the back-end of this year, as stated on the AI dailog, Webstudio AI is still very much in it's alpha state.

Feel free to pop into the community to continue the convo, again, really appreciate you taking the time to write up a detailed review, I look forward to seeing those taco numbers change as we ship new functionality to address the above 😇💗🙏🚀
