A very promising tool with some issues

I can see Wellybox being something that I’m very glad I purchased a year or so from now, providing they have ironed out some issues.

It’s straightforward to connect multiple mailboxes and start the import. When Wellybox does import, it does this process well, although see the caveats below.

The ability to sort between mailboxes is decent, and you can add new categories to organise receipts. However, you can’t then arrange those categories to place your own bespoke most used cases at the top of the drop-down menu – any new categories are always at the bottom of an already long list.

The WhatsApp feature works well and has built in OCR recognition. In my experience this works okay, provided you don’t introduce too much skew/perspective into the picture (i.e. you want the receipt in the picture to have right angles). I also think this would be better done in a dedicated app, but WhatsApp works for now, and perhaps an app is in the pipeline?

I haven’t tried exporting yet, but I was able to connect my Google Drive seamlessly.

Some issues I experience which made this a four-star review.

When I first tried to sign up by connecting my Gmail I kept receiving an error message. Support informed me this was due to a traffic spike and after a day of repeated attempts, it resolved.

Duplicates are common place, particularly from Amazon, as the order and dispatch emails for the same item are identified as separate purchases.

There’s currently no algorithm for distinguishing between funds out for receipts, and funds in, e.g. funds received via PayPal.

I connected three mailboxes and only two synced. Support asked me to remove and resync said mailbox – upon doing this it only indexed 9 months of receipts before stopping.

I contacted support a week ago as a further follow up to this:

"Please could you elaborate on the bugginess of this feature, what might be causing it, and if this is something that will likely be ironed out in the near future?

Also, there is a dialog box under inboxes that states, “Last Sync”, however it is displaying no data for each of three email boxes I have connected. Is this a planned feature that is yet to be fully implemented?"

But haven’t heard anything back.

So in summary support can be slow, but perhaps that’s to be expected with an AppSumo launch

Overall Wellybox already delivers, albeit imperfectly, and if it has a dedicated team behind it, it will be awesome in six months to a year from now.
