Four tacos for now — and here's why

This is, so far, a mixed bag that I hope gets better as they get over the huge increase in traffic and technical problems from this deal.

I bought Wordplay yesterday, and the first thing I wanted to do was test the AI module and see if it could knock out a decent long-form article with just a keyword or two as the creator claimed.

It. Was. Flawless. I selected 500 words (you can also opt for 750 and 1500) and got back 630. However, I was only charged for the 500 (nice).

I own three other AI writing tools, and have subscribed to several more, including the so-called best of breed. NONE ever spit out anything like the piece Wordplay gave, even after I worked with a tool for an hour or more, using all their prompts, tricks, and workarounds.

All I did was give Wordplay two words, and in a few minutes I got back a finished piece with subheads I didn't generate on my own, and it made sense. I could have stood up at a podium and delivered what they gave me, and would have received a decent grade.

Okay, that's the good part of the review.

Their site is shaky, and they say that's because of the workload they hadn't anticipated. I'll take them at their word. If true, this should improve.

My second project didn't work. I asked for quotations on a subject. The system wrote another nice intro paragraph and then wrote: "Here are 15 motivational quotes..." The trouble is, no quotes followed. Maybe there are workarounds. Hopefully, somebody from the company will see this and respond.

Wordplay needs a chat service. My guess is this is a very small team and they don't have the people to handle that, or they just don't think it's necessary. All you can do is email and they indicated it will be up to two days before they reply.

Other thoughts...

Wordplay limits are very tight. You only get 7500 words per month.

I also bought Writecream yesterday, and they offer 400,000 characters per month, or about 67,000 words, for $59. In my writing, I count 6 characters as one word, so Writecream's limit is NINE TIMES higher than Wordplay.

If they presumably use the same technology to power their systems, I wonder why one is so much more than the other.

I know I can buy more codes from Wordplay at $99 each, but that's really not the issue. The limit is too low.

I also suggest Wordplay create the option to buy additional words in a given month when a project requires it...say one-time bundles of 10,000 words for $10. That way, you could even write a book and not have to think of where you are with your word count.

Four tacos for now. The output can be industry best, no doubt, but the system also needs work — and I hope they review limitations to add better value and opportunity.

I'd like to think Wordplay can be a keeper.
