what is the use of the cname ? what gets customized
as it is just optimizing images so where is the cname used ?
excuse my ignorance.

We do accept and accelerate gifs in the service! 🚀
In live optimization mode, your images and assets will load from *.zapwp.com - however we recommend using your own website's domain for serving images and scripts.
The most common domain we see is cdn.yoursite.com - and it can be set up simply within the plugin under PRO Settings and scrolling to Custom CDN Domain!
That is for LIVE optimization mode, if you simply want to use LOCAL media library compression you would not need to use a custom CDN domain :)
