Finally Took It for a Real Test Drive... And I'm Impressed!

I’ll admit it... I’ve bought nearly 400 deals over the years here on Appsumo and I don’t leave reviews often. And yes, true to form, I let this one sit for a bit before I finally cracked it open. But when I logged in and realized my monthly credits were about to refresh and I hadn't even used any of them, I decided I may as well use some of those credits to take it for a spin.

So I gave it two real tests.

Test #1: I gave it an idea I wasn’t committed to, just to see what it would do. It built a full 12-chapter book. Good structure, very readable... but when you don’t give it much to work with, it fills the gaps with its own made-up examples. Lesson learned.

Test #2: I gave it one of my own proprietary frameworks, my own definitions and examples. WHOA... What a difference! In one afternoon I had a clean nine-chapter book, an Editorial Review of the whole manuscript, a cover, and a 2.5-hour audiobook that I uploaded to a Past Appsumo Deal - Soundwise - so I can listen to it via an App on my Phone through my Bluetooth as I'm driving around in my Car.

What impressed me most:

* There are places EVERYWHERE to give it instructions. Book description, chapter notes (up to 40,000 characters), reference files, and per-chapter AI instructions. The more of YOUR material you feed it, the more it sounds like your book instead of everybody’s book.

* You pick the AI model chapter by chapter (I've tested Gemini & Claude and as you likely already know Claude it better overall for writing as represented by the 30 credits per chapter instead of 15 credits per chapter for Gemini) so I've been using Claude for each of my Chapters.

* The Editorial Review is legit. It caught repetition across chapters that would’ve taken me hours to find myself.

* The founder actually answers questions. I posted one and had a detailed, honest reply the next morning.

A few tips from my testing:

I've only tested the Non-Fiction Book type so these tips will be based on that...

* Feed it your own content and examples if you have them. Garbage in, garbage out still applies.

* Read the Line Edits before accepting them. Some suggestions made my plain-talk style a bit too academic for my taste... In fact, while the Editorial Review provides to usable data, I found myself pretty much skipping the Line Editor (at least for my second book) even though once I get even better at using it, maybe I will find the Line Editor more useful for me.

* The audiobook feature is impressive, but it uses a big chunk of credits, so good thing I have Tier 4 - because if you plan on using the Audiobook feature much, you'll require reasonable credits for that. My 9 Chapter approx 22K word book cost about 2,500 credits (or around that amount). The quality of the AudioBook Voice I selected turned out really good though.

Bottom line... If you have content, frameworks, courses, or ideas sitting around that deserve to become books, this tool will get you from “someday” to “done” faster than anything I’ve tried.

In fact, I'm in the Middle of Developing a Portable Playbook for my Book Creation Workflow which will now involve AiWriteBook.

May the Force Stay with this One!

Thank you for finally cracking it open, and for writing up both tests so honestly. Test #1 vs Test #2 is the lesson I'd want every new user to read: give it your own frameworks and examples and you get your book. Give it little and it fills the gaps itself.

Your numbers check out. Claude is 30 credits a chapter and Gemini is 15. Narration is 1 credit per 50 characters, so a 22K-word book comes to about 2,400 to 2,500 credits with one voice (multi-voice adds 20%).

Two tips that fit how you work:

- For your plain-talk style, paste 6 to 10 paragraphs of your own writing into the Writing Style field on the book's Details step. The chapters then follow your voice. Skipping line edits that make you sound academic is fine, they're suggestions.

- Since your best results came from your own frameworks, try Expert Book (it's on Tier 4). You add your talks, slides, documents or recordings, answer a short voice interview about the gaps, and the chapters are built only from that material. During the beta it's 2,500 credits per book, and that covers every chapter, the editor, formatting and marketing materials for that book: https://aiwritebook.com/en/features/expert-book/

Good luck with the Portable Playbook.

I hope it helps!
