A close friend of ours recommended us to purchase Alter. After reading about what it here on AppSumo, we just had to give it a try. So we purchased it before it was too late, besides if we didn't like it we could ask for a refund. So we put it to the test and found out it lived up to the expectations and we are so happy we purchased it on time.
Having a native AI assistant? What was that about?
We use ChatGPT, DeepSeek and Gemini and didnt really need a new AI assistant but Alter is more than that, its a local AI AGENT.

USE CASE:
We had this task to search for 100 book covers and scrape their images for a project. Doing that manually was a pain and we were procrastinating on it for weeks, cause we always had other priorities on the list we could finish faster. Yesterday, while we were taking a 1 hour online course, we decided to hand that tedious task to Alter. We gave it a list of book titles with a simple prompt. We were not expecting this to work, but after about 30 to 40 minutes, Alter came back with a Spreadsheet with all the book covers image urls organized beautifully 😱😱😱😱

This would have taken us maybe about 2-3 days to get this done, focussing solely on this task. Hiring anyone at a hourly rate would cost us about 200 dollars.

The result = ALTER is a tool that will save you time and money. It is powerful!!! ☄️

This is our first use case and we already love it. So much more to discover with this tool.

I am still learning the endless capabilities of Alter, but the amount of time it has saved me in the last week alone is crazy. It is one of those rare apps that you wonder how you ever worked without it. The way it interacts directly with my Mac it's like I am working in the future! This is probably my favourite purchase on AppSumo ever, and every day I find something new I can use it for.

Initially, I found the app quite annoying. There were so many windows popping up everywhere, and the AI kept trying to record my screen when I went to YouTube. Plus, most of the shortcuts conflicted with those I use in Ableton Live.

However, I’ve been using it more and more, fine-tuning the options I need and want. I’ve actually found the AI to be one of the most powerful and useful I’ve used in a while. Tasks I give it are done at almost 100% accuracy every time.

A few things I’d change:

1. When I give the AI a directory to work with, it goes through and asks for permissions for every subfolder and file. It’s a lot, and I’m not sure if this is a setting I need to adjust.
2. Workspaces should be in a buried directory, perhaps in the Documents or Username folder.

Other than that, I highly recommend this purchase.

Alter is what Alice could have been if they made it easier to use.

I had fun using the app.

The only issues / requests that I have:
We need to be able to add more than one account to an app. For example, it is great that Gmail is a natively integrated app, but you can only add one Gmail account (as far as I can tell). The other alternative is to aggregate all your accounts in Apple Mail. TBH, I do not use Apple Mail and would like to keep it that way. However, I could make an exception.

Please allow access to some features via Telegram or another interface that supports mobile use.

The voice to command feature completely changed how I work on my Mac. I literally just speak and Alter does the rest. No more typing prompts or switching between apps. Just say it and it happens.

What really blew my mind is scraping website info and extracting data using just voice actions. I pointed it at a page spoke my intent and got structured results instantly. That alone saved me hours of manual copy and paste.

BYOK is included so you can plug in your own API keys and use whatever model you want. No lock in. Your keys your models your workflow. And with Fal MCP integration you can generate images right from Alter without opening another tool. It just works.

Unlimited meeting transcription is another big one. Record transcribe and get summaries with action items all locally on your Mac. No bots no third party cloud services eating up your data.

Alter has so much potential it is honestly hard to describe in one review. Every time I use it I discover something new it can do. The integration with apps I already use the context awareness of what is on my screen and the speed of execution make it feel like a true copilot not just another AI chatbot.

I cannot list all the positive things here because there are simply too many. The team is responsive the product keeps improving and the value for what you pay is insane.
